NHTSA — Steering Problems

2006 Saturn Ion (Page 14 of 27)

CarComplaints.com Seal Of Avoid Like The Plague

CarComplaints.com Notes: When it comes to the 2006 Ion, the biggest questions are: what big problem is going to pop up next? And how long until GM chooses to address it?

The 2006 Ion has a defective ignition switch that gave owners fits. Their keys would get stuck in the ignition, the engine wouldn’t shut off or in some cases it would shut off at the most dangerous time. The ignition was eventually recalled as part of one of the largest recalls of all-time , but it took GM 10 years to do it. Then there’s this car’s temperamental power steering which is prone to stop working randomly while driving. It too was eventually recalled, even if GM took their sweet time about it.

Lastly, it turns out a car built with plastic doors, fenders and bumpers – while fun for a game of “shopping cart bocce” – is horrible for safety.

While my wife was driving our 2006 Saturn Ion, the "pwr str" light came on and she lost power steering control. Shutting off the engine resumed the power steering to the vehicle but repeated the failure numerous times before being able to drive the vehicle home. This is now occurring numerous times without any warning. This I believe is a safety related item which should require a recall of this vehicle. The vehicle is barely drivable because it is so difficult to make turns. The vehicle only has 40,000 miles.

Power steering repeatedly goes out. Turning the car off and on "fixes" it for a short time then it happens again. Sometimes after 20 minutes of driving and sometimes 30 seconds after restarting. It started as a very intermittent issue but has since gotten worse as time goes on. Before this started I had other electrical issues. First the odometer would flash on and off and occasionally flash "trunk". later the indicator light for the parking brake would come on without touching the brake. They eventually went away then the steering issue started.

2006 Saturn Ion 2 sedan: "pwr str" light came on and steering wheel locked. I stopped the car, turned it off and restarted it, and I drove 1/2 of a mile and "pwr str" light came on again and the steering wheel locked again. I am concerned for my safety because if this has happened on the freeway I could have been seriously injured!

Power steering assist failure. At highway speed of 65 mph the power steering warning light came on. It occurred after approximately 2 hours of driving. At that speed it was not especially difficult to steer but when exiting the highway it became extremely difficult. After shutting the car off for approx. 5 minutes when I turned it back on the warning light was off and the power steering then worked. Took it immediately to my mechanic and found that it was the power steering module. The same as was recalled by GM although our 2006 Saturn Ion was not included in that recall. We have approx. 113,000 miles on the car.

I recently have experienced a loss of power steering in my 2006 Saturn Ion. This has randomly occurred four times over the past two weeks. Suddenly, the warning message "pwr str" will appear in place of my digital odometer reading and the car will immediately lose power steering and becomes extremely difficult to steer and dangerous to drive. I have found that am able to "reset" the steering by pulling over and turning the car off and back on again. I have never experienced this problem prior to two weeks ago. The car has approx 185K miles on it. After experiencing this issue today (the fourth time it has happened), I did a search on the internet and learned that NHTSA is currently investigating Saturn Ions for this issue (NHTSA action number : RQ10004), to determine whether the vehicle should have been included in a recall for the same issue with other GM cars. Please consider this complaint in your investigation.

Have a 2006 Saturn Ion 2 and was making a left hand turn when the warning chime went off and displayed "pwr stg" in the dash display. Immediately after the chime the power steering went out making it very difficult to turn the vehicle. Started car the following day and the power steering worked again. Approximately 15 miles later, I was making a right hand turn and the power steering went out again. Car is now sitting in driveway unused. Taking car into GM dealership tomorrow for diagnosis but they seemed to know what was wrong before looking at it.

While driving at 70mph the power steering light came on and I lost power steering. I exited the interstate and pulled off the road. I turned the engine off then counted to 10 and started it up, the light went out and the power steering was back. The next time I was in city traffic when the power steering light can on and the power steering died. Again I pulled over and restarted the engine and it was ok. The problem is intermittent and unpredictable. I went online with Saturn and they recommend a Saturn service center. I also read blogs that the repair will be over $1000 and not covered by a recall or warranty. I have parked my Saturn Ion in the driveway and may have to tow it to a dealer.
