There is a Subaru Of America technical bulletin where they acknowledge the faulty knock sensor design,

When Check Engine Light comes on Performance are greatly reduced (including Fuel Economy). The cruise control is also disabled.

The dealer could tell me up front How much replacing the Knock sensor would unless an evaluation was done. I decided to buy the 2 knock sensors(200$+) but decided against replacing them once I saw the procedure which basically involved removing everything on top of the engine (including fuel lines).

I was hoping Subaru would cover this "out of warranty" because it's a faulty design and they know about.

It also of course came along "just after the 60000 km warranty" within 3 years....
