We leased this car on Friday and the transmission problem occurred on Sunday... It's virtually brand new. Luckily, my wife was able to pull over to the side of the road when the car lost power. Our son was able to rescue her with another car. They swapped cars and he was able to make it home. She could have been rear-ended if she had made it to the interstate. We are taking it to the dealer tomorrow and I hope we make it. I might have the dealer pick it up.

Going along at highway speeds the transmission all of a sudden drops into first gear and the car slows dramatically and red lines the engines rpm's. The dealer's response was to continue driving and see if it happens again and don't worry that the engine red lined because the factory red lines every engine before installing it in the car. I'm lucky this happened at 5 am with not many cars on the highway otherwise I most likely would have been rearended because the brakelights don't come on when this happens to alert the driver behind me. At 219 miles all I've been getting from the dealer I bought the car from is a run around. This is a significant safety problem and the dealer does not seem to get it. I opened a case with VW and have requested a new car replacement but maybe I should ask for a refund. I'm waiting to see what happens next. The dealer has had my car now for five days and when I call to get answers from the service managers they say they will check on it and call me back but they never call back. I'm definitely kicking myself for not checking further into the CC line to see past problems especially with the DSG gearbox. The gearbox problem does not seem to have been fixed.
