I bought this VW GTI, new form Barlow World VW Brighton Victoria in June 2013 and has always used significant amounts of engine oil. Within the warranty period, I complained of constantly needing to add oil to the engine on a regular basis. The dealer suggest an oil consumption test which was performed and passed as normal oil consumption for the MK6 GTI. As the years pasted, I noticed the consumption getting progressively worse. In June 2019, I asked for another oil consumption test which unfortunately was not able to complete as I had to drive down to Sydney for 2 months. I ask the dealer to perform another oil consumption test in July 2020 and it failed. The dealer(Austral VW Brisbane) said that the pistons and rings need to be replaced at my cost!!!!!. I have ask the dealer to talk to VW in regards to this as I'm pretty sure that pistons and rings should last longer that 90,000Kms. Never in my life have I ever needed new pistons and rings on any of my vehicles, new or second hand at 90,000kms. I believe this has been a problem with bad engineering from VW and I have been sold a defective engine. The vehicle has never been modified has never missed a service and all the services have been done by a VW dealer. I hope for VW's sake, they will pay 100% of the repair costs involved otherwise there will be litigation. I have also been told by one of the technicians at Austral VW that there is a problem with the pistons and rings on my engine code. Audi has had class action against them with the exact same issue and the same engine.
