I took my 1 year old Jetta to the mechanic for yearly required inspection and was told the rear brakes were down to 0.2. The car barely passed the inspection. Took the car to the dealer, and it was confirmed the rear brake pads had to be replaced - on a one year old vehicle with only about 24K miles on it! Evidently, VW was aware of this major issue as the mechanic at the dealer told me they found that VW extended the warranty on rear brake pads to 2 years/ 24,000 miles. My car barely qualified at the time so they were replaced at no charge. The quoted cost was $733 at the time. I got a letter in the mail about the extended warranty after rear brake pads had already been replaced. The car is currently at 56K miles, and the rear brake pads have been holding up, but I'm still a bit nervous. Beware.
