Three times between October 30, 2003 and May 11, 2004, the rear passenger window has shattered into a million shards of glass. The first time we paid for the repair. The second time, March 26, 2004, the dealer covered the cost. Not sure what will happen this time. The Volkswagon representative that reviewed the issue in March said Volkswagon was not at fault, an outside influence caused the window to shatter. Wrong! Thankfully, all three times the window has shattered the car has been parked, the first two times in the garage, the third time in the parking lot at work. The Volkswagon rep doesn't seem too concerned. But, what if it happens while driving with someone in the back seat? I have found other occurrences of this problem in 2001 Passats listed at the NHTSA web site. www.nhtsa. dot. gov There was also one listed for 2002 Passats. The dealer has replaced a number of parts, but it hasn't seemed to resolve the problem. We keep wondering when it will happen again.
