My Volvo started to make some engine noise. Had it diagnosed and told it was the READ unit (Rear End Accessory Drive), This unit drives only the alternator and is part of the engine block. Options are to rebuild this unit if possible or replace the engine. Rebuilding it runs the risk of cracking the block making a new engine necessary at that point. My mechanic didn't want to attempt it because of the risk of damaging the block so I called Volvo and was quoted $4600 to rebuild if possible and $6000 to replace the engine with a used one. This is a horrible and expensive design with no real benefit except to their wallets. This design is on the 3.0 and 3.2 straight 6 engines used on 2007 and later Volvos. Beware of this catastrophic design. My 1999 S80 was not designed like this. I loved my Volvos but if this is the way they are going to engineer them then they have lost me as a customer.
