CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2nd generation XC70 has a transmission issue and the 2003 model year seems to be the worst of it. These are still solidly built and comfortable cars, but if you're looking at buying used you might be better off avoiding the 2003 unless it has already had its transmission replaced.
I blasted Volvo on the replacement of the angle gear. Obviously this is a problem. Volvo North America sent me a token credit. This is the first of many, many serious problems with this car. My 940 wagon has 265,000 miles on it and I've done routine maintenance and repairs!
My AWD drive stopped working and essentially just my front right wheel was driving the car. It was a very dangerous condition as I found out while driving in rain. The dealer said the bevel gear needed to be replaced at a cost of $2800.00. The dealer could not explain why this happened so that leads me to believe that this ugly problem will happen all over again since the cause has NOT been fixed. I called Volvo customer service and basically they just don't give a damn. I paid a premium price for a high quality car and instead ended up with a third world piece of junk with no customer support. I will be selling the headache now and I intend to tell everyone possible about this so they don't waste their money on a Volvo. It's the only thing I can do to hurt Volvo. What really kills me is the fact that just a month after I had the repair done I made my last payment on it.
