GM Recalls 2017 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra Trucks
GM recalls nearly 30,000 trucks because child restraint instructions are missing from manuals.

— General Motors is recalling nearly 30,000 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 trucks because the owner’s manuals for the trucks may be missing instructions for using tether anchorages and child restraint anchorage systems in the vehicle.

GM says the owner's manuals for the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 trucks can cause child seats to be installed incorrectly, leaving the seats unsecured and children unprotected in a crash.

A GM engineer discovered the problem during a routine check of the draft manuals for model year 2018 Silverado and Sierra trucks. The engineer noticed certain sections relating to child restraint anchorage systems were missing from the 2018 manuals, something that caused the automaker to open an internal investigation.

General Motors determined the 2017 owner’s manuals for all Silverado and Sierra cab configurations confirmed that the owner’s manuals for the regular-cab configuration were the only manuals missing the required child-restraint sections. This makes all the trucks in violation of federal safety standards.

The Silverado 1500 trucks were built May 5, 2016, to May 9, 2017, and the Sierra 1500s were manufactured between June 23, 2016, through May 9, 2017.

Assembly plants that manufacture the trucks started adding the correct instructions on May 9, 2017.

The automaker doesn't know when the Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 recall will begin, but dealers will provide owners an insert to add to the manuals.

Truck owners with questions should call Chevrolet at 800-222-1020 or GMC at 800-462-8782 and ask about recall number 17307.
