CarComplaints.com Notes: Say what you will about the styling of the Ford Edge, but the bottom line is owners seem to love this vehicle. That is, of course, except in the case of it's dangerous, worrisome and unexplained issues with random engine stalling.

Our data suggests an early defect trend, as owners of the 2007-2008 models have started posting their accounts of what happens when you're driving down the road and the engine just stops. Some at high speed, some at low speed but always a random shutdown of the engine, electrical and power steering.

Time will tell if this becomes a widespread issue, but there's no drying the seriousness of the problem. With that in mind, we're flagging the Edge with our "Beware of the Clunker" rating until the situation improves.

My daughter brought this vehicle used and the company that she brought it from went out of business. Now the transmission may be slipping and she has only had it a year. It was pulling when she first purchased it and she thought it was suppose to do that. Knowing a little bit about cars I told her it shouldn't be doing that. I took it to at least 3 mechanics. One said the transmission is slipping the 4th gear and the other two said that it is the converter and the sensors. So I replaced one of the sensors, not knowing that there are three on this vehicle, underneath the car where the converter is. Now I'm going to replace the converter that I had flushed to see if that will do the trick. My daughter just purchased this car last year and she keeps it up. This is how she get back and fourth to work on the daily basis and can't afford to lose her job. Is there anybody out there that can give me a definite answer on what it could be and if it is the transmission, is a recall on this car. Thank you in advance

My car will, out of nowhere, stop accelerating. I have been on the hwy where I have had to pull off because I am not able to accelerate, or on side streets not able to move from a stop sign. This is a huge hazard, and I am becoming afraid to drive my car anywhere. I have taken it in a few times for a hard shift, but told nothing was wrong, because they could not recreate the issue. I have called again today to bring it in as I feel it is a safety issue and my appointment can not be made for 10 days. From reading all of the posts, and seeing lawsuits for issues that sound very similar to mine, I am wondering why nothing is being done? I really hope that this does not cause an accident for me or others. I was going to pass this car down to my son who will be 16 soon, but from reading everything, I am frightened to do anything with it.

Same story as many other posters here, just adding to the list. 2008 Ford Edge w/ 75,000. Speedometer quits working, low tire pressure light, wrench light, airbag light -- initially works as if in low gear (high rpm's and little speed), then quits accelerating all together -- loud thump when change between P / R / D. This is the 3rd occurrence in last 6 months -- turning off/on fixed it in the past, but it was worse this time and that didn't fix it. Too scared to drive on it, so had it towed to Aamco. Hope car is in fail safe mode and replacing sensors will be the answer -- we'll see!!

Update from Jan 22, 2017: Indeed the car was in fail safe mode and the issue was sensor failure. They replaced the output sensor (~$45 part) and I requested that they replace the input sensor (~$45 part) as well while we're into it. Labor was $410 (as they have to drop the trans to physically reach the output sensor) plus $50 for trans fluid replacement plus sales tax. Total ~600. Now to sit back and hope to see a recall occur, which they'll typically reimburse you for prior costs for the event.

Edge Limited 3.5L V6

When exiting the expressway I observed an ODO error message on my dashboard. Also the speedometer stopped working, wrench light illuminated, tire pressure light illuminated. When I tried to accelerate from stop light engine would rev but car was very slow in picking up speed. Luckily I was only a couple of miles from my job and it was night time.

Researched the issue on line and discovered numerous complaints exactly as mine. Waited until my shift was over and started my car to see if I needed to get a tow. No more lights were illuminated but a significant clunk of the transmission was heard when putting the vehicle in reverse to back out of my parking spot. Same clunk was heard when I shifted into drive. Upon accelerating the vehicle again was very slow in accelerating. After about 100 feet it picked up speed as normal. Afraid to take it on the interstate to get home, I drove 35 miles on the streets to get home. At least if I had the same problem, I wouldn't have to break down on the expressway causing injury to myself or someone else.

Took the vehicle to my Ford dealer in the morning when they opened. After diagnosing my car, they told me 2 sensors in the transmission had to be replaced. When I asked if the sensors were readily available, they told me that they keep them in stock as this is a common problem with the 2008 Edge. The cost to replace the sensors was over $1000.

I am an adult driver that does not abuse my vehicle in any way. I drive over 80 highway miles to and from work every day so I like to keep my vehicle in tip top condition, having all my maintenance services done by Ford. I also have been strictly a Ford person since 1977 owning numerous vehicles. But I have to say this is the worst Ford I have ever owned.

Also, since Ford has to be aware of this issue and refuses to do anything about it except take your money, I have to say that this will be the last Ford vehicle I will buy. I gave my Windstar to a friend from my Church that had fallen on hard times. The vehicle had 315,000 miles on it and I never had any internal mechanical or transmission work done to it. And guess what, after 2 years he's still driving it and thanks me every time he sees me because he still hasn't had to do anything major to repair the engine or transmission.

This sensor issue with the Edge is not the only problem I have had with it. Hopefully I can get rid of it before I have to spend any more money fixing things. I just feel sorry for the person that buys it.

Edge SEL 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission

Driving out of Ford service center and car was jumping up to 3000rpms when i decelerate from 30mph on a local street. It was acting up that night and when I drove the car next day it was fine . Day after problem occured again this time it shut off when parking the car in reverse . I love my truck but seems to have a faulty transmission and ford mechanics never find anything wrong with transmission . I think when car is turned off it reset all error codes which is normally saved .

Driving and all of a sudden the car decelerates. I did find out that if you unhook the battery cable and let it sit for 5 minutes and replace the cable, it resets itself. But, it does it often!

I took it to the Ford dealership and was told that it is not showing anything wrong, but I know something was off. I went on Youtube and saw a lot more people have had this same problem with the 2008 Ford Edge. I told the dealership that Youtube states it is the speed sensor that needs replacing. They stated they have had more Ford Edges with the same problem. They are fixing my vehicle and just charging me $900.00 to do it! It should be free!!

I do not know why Ford is not placing a recall on this fix. It is dangerous when you are driving on the road and your car just decelerates in traffic. It is a wonder someone has not had a bad crash! I came close a couple of times!

Edge AWD 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 81,000 miles

I have a 2008 Ford Edge AWD that on occasion will not accelerate from a stop. This has occurred intermittently since I have owned the vehicle, about 2 years. I will be stopped and when I go to take off nothing. The engine will rev but at most it will only go about 5 mph. In the past shutting it off, waiting a couple of minutes and then restarting would clear the problem but not this time. After sitting over night when you crank it and shift it into gear it seems as if the engine is going to leap out of the car and the there is an accompanying loud bang but the car won't move.

This seems to be a fairly common problem with this model and fortunately I haven't had it occur on the highway although it has happened in the past while driving. This is very dangerous. I know the repair bill will be big so it will stay parked until I can save the money to get it looked at and what I have seen it most likely seems to be related to the Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor (TSS) and Output Shaft Speed Sensor (OSS) sensors in the transmission. I am scared to drive this vehicle now and will have to have it towed to the dealership for repairs.

I can't believe, based on the number of complaints, You Tube videos, etc that I have seen on this issue that this vehicle hasn't been recalled. Here is a video from somebody that shows how bad the problem is, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDwPaFpvU0o (Start at the 2:25 mark)
