I just filled my gas talk and was heading up my driveway in my 2000 Ford F150. When the gas strap rusted out and broke. The weight of the tank forced the other strap to break and my tank came flying out the back end. The tank hit the receiver hitch and slit a hole in the tank spilling gas everywhere. One spark and I would have certainly been killed. I have read several other complaints online about the same problem.

I purchased my 2000 Ford F150 from an auction on June 14, 2010. On June 22nd less than a week after being md inspected, one of the two straps holding my gas tank broke due to excessive rust. The rust had not been evident, it was covered by a plastic outer covering on the strap. Fortunately my step-son was only driving 15 mph (just turned onto the main street) when it happened. There was no fire, but it could have been deadly.

Back strap of gasoline tank on our Ford 150 broke and tank got disconnected from filler hose. Updated 08/08/11 the consumer stated he noticed the problem when attempting to refueled the vehicle. The consumer heard the sound of liquid spilling. Upon looking under the vehicle, he saw the rear strap had broken and the tank was hanging down. Consequently, the fuel filter pipe was disconnected. The consumer was informed the rear strap had rusted through and the front strap was in the process of doing the same thing. Also, the tank was rusted so that when the fuel tank dropped, the filler neck tore out of the tank causing fuel to spill on the ground when refueling. The tank also had to be replaced. Thus, the support straps were rusted out to the point where they needed to be replaced. Updated 08/15/11

Just turned off hwy onto gravel road. Felt a jolt and thought I had a flat tire. Pulled over and upon inspection noticed the fuel tank straps had broken and I was dragging the fuel tank down the road. Due to being on gravel there were no sparks and no fire. Tank was ruined and had to replace that along with both straps. Check engine light will not re-set since the incident as well.
