I bought a 2006 xlt 5.4 3v 4x4, and it sucks. The dealer told me they had to replace the Cam Phasers, the timing chain, tensioners, spark plugs, exhaust, and fuel filter. When I bought it and drove it from Alrington Heights (near chicago) back to rockford I was perfect. Now the truck won't stop knocking and stalling out at hot idle.. meaning I have to drive it for a little while at high way speeds to get the oil warmed up. When I come to a stop the RPMs drop below 600 and the engine knocks and stalls out. I've replaced the VCT solenoids and that worked for about less then a month and the same thing started happening again. I took it to a ford dealer ship in Rockford and they said I needed a new Fuel pump driver module so I replaced that... still the engine knocks and stalls. I had a mechanic hook a mechanic oil pressure gauge up to it to see where the oil pressure was at hot idle and he told me it was bouncing from 5psi to 35psi... it should be hold steady at 25psi. This is the worst vehicle I have ever owned... I have a 2000 Chevy blazer 4.3 with over 200k on it original transmission, engine, and powertrain and it has never failed. I'm more than positive the next mechanic I take it too will tell me I need a new engine which is what the end story for alot of these piece of sh*t 5.4 3v engines are. Last Ford I ever buy and I'll never even think about buying another one... Buy Chevy.. ford is horrible. I read that they have a class action lawsuit against them because of this engine.

Stalling and misfiring. Scan engine control; system has cam and crankshaft codes and multiple cylinder misfires. Replace timing chain and tensioners, rails and cam phasers, replace VVT solenoids, replace valve cover gaskets. Install new water pump, repair power steering line rusted out. Replace idler pulley. Fill with new coolant. Replace spark plugs and cool boots. Extract 3 broken spark plugs replace all plugs, Install new coil boots. Could not check oil dip stick frozen. DRill out dipstick to remove install new dipstick. The mechanic said this should of a never happened on the truck especially with only that many miles.

This motor is a joke. Shame on you Ford for not making good on this issue. I have spent nearly $2000 replacing plugs, coil packs etc trying to avoid having to take the truck to Ford for cam phasers.

The truck makes a loud tick and bogs down when trying to accelerate or when trying to climb the slightest incline. The truck has essentially be useless to me since 2014. I cannot get it inspected because the check engine light is on and therefore cannot get it registered. It just sits.

I really think that Ford should make good on this issue since the Triton motor is virtually a money pit.

I own 2 Fords and have had 7 in my life. I can honestly say that unless Ford issues a recall on this, that I will never buy another Ford again.

cam phasers and lack of oil pressure during hot idle

this is my first Ford truck , my dad is a Chevy man at 75. He has had 12 Chevys, never had a cam phaser problem . . but the F150 to me was supposed to be the ride of my dream. This problem won't go away. Fixing this truck in the Bahamas, is most expansive, to the tune of 3500 dollars ..

I would NEVER buy another ford truck. This cam phaser failure happened after only 84,000 miles. I spent $2100 to repair. I now have no confidence in this truck. As I have searched many web sites I find this to be a common issue with this year. FORD MOTOR COMPANY SHAME ON YOU. This should have been a recall issue. You know of this issue I am sure. John Q public be aware.......DO NOT BUY THIS MODEL

F-150 Lariat 5.4L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 111,000 miles

Never really liked Ford vehicle, but fell in love with the 2006 version F150 5.4 lariat. Bought it with 8,000 miles, almost new. Finish paying for it in February this year thought i would enjoy my ride for a few more years. Truck started acting up, getting slouchy (slow) so too it to a mechanic to change spark plugs, who broke the first one off but managed to get it out, and had to leave the rest in. Then this loud ticking noise started. Everywhere i stopped people kept wondering what the hell am i driving. Returned to mechanic whom pulled off the front of the engine and from there all problems started. No oil was reaching the cam area, the phasers were bad. Spoke to a remanufacturer of these engines and understood the problems which Ford knew about but still did nothing about. Bad oil pump, holes for oil to get through are too small, bad phasers, bad f------ everything. Engine cost me $4600.00, mechanic $1200.00 plus more. Scared the transmission will soon go. Never will buy a vehicle if the name starts with F. Toyota or Honda all the way.

No problems were found with my truck, or noted for that matter until it went out of warranty. After numerous repairs and suggested tune up(which they said was the noise problem) it was finally determined that the noise was the CAM PHASERS. Wish they would have figured that out when I had 33000 on my truck, or at least documented it. Looks like a very expensive repair or a new engine. This was my first new truck, this is the last FORD I will ever buy. Hope this helps somebody, because ford won't do a thing about it.

F-150 King Ranch 5.4L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 103,148 miles

Bought truck and second day the engine light came on. Code said "misfire in first 1000 revolutions". Used vehicle seller said drive it if light not flashing. 5000 Km later truck would not run without missing. Would not idle. Wanted to stall. Code now says "bad cam phaser bank 2". Towed to Lubrico Warranty area dealer and fixed for $1400.00 Canadian ( I had to pay $163.00 for testing). Drove for less than 100 km. Engine light on. New code is PO420 - Oxygen sensor or catalytic converter bad. Drives OK. Returned to seller. He told me to go to place where cam phaser was replaced. New cat required. Warranty won't cover it. My cost is $800.00. $2200.00 has now been spent on a vehicle I have only put 5000 km on. Do I sell now or are my problems all behind me ? I'll never buy another Ford. Ford knows about the problems with this engine. Can you say class-action law suit?

I purchased the truck in May of 2009 and by June it was sounding like a diesel. I researched and discovered that it is a known problem. The dealer diagnosed the problem but the extended warranty company won't do anything for a noise, the say it has to blow up first. I am fighting them on that. This is a design problem by Ford. This is my first Ford vehicle and my last. I should have kept my good running Chevy truck that had 226,000 miles on it. I don't have 8k to put a new engine in this truck.
