rear window shattered

While driving down the highway, I heard a loud Pop. Sounded like a rock hit the roof or the truck being shot. Got home and went over the truck in the garage but found no body damage - but did not think to look at the rear sliding window unit. After pulling out during daylight hours, I realized my rear window had shattered. Window heaters were not on at that time. IS FORD GOING TO DO ANY THING ABOUT THIS COMMON ISSUE? RECALLS? THIS IS A SUPER SAFETY CONCERN.

rear window shattered rear window shattered

My husband and I recently bought this 2013 f150 platinum truck in oct we have not put 700 miles on it since we got it. We got it used with 97,726 miles on it and bought the premiumcare warranty on it. My husband drives it back and forth to work. On dec 4th he started the truck with the auto start button as he always does. He went to the truck and placed his lunch bag and coffee thermos in the rear floor as he always does and closed the door. He walked towards the end of the drive to check the mail from the day before and heard a loud bang like a gun went off as he got to the rear of the truck. He walked toward the front of the truck looking for any signs of a person with a gun. He found nothing. So he checked the mail and he got in the truck to head to work. When he looked back he noticed what he thought was ice on the rear driver window. He turned the rear defroster on thinking it would defrost. It never went away. Later when he returned to the truck from work he realized the rear window was not iced but shattered. What caused the issue had to of been from one of 2 things. Either the cab pressure was to much for the weak window or the rear defrost was on auto and got to hot breaking the window. I have since called the service center for ford (saturday morning at 9am) spoke to mike to see if it was covered under my warranty. He said he seen that my window heating components where covered but he would have to see if he could replace the window itself under my warranty. He took my phone number and said he would call be back. Im still waiting on a call back. Im not sure why it wouldnt be covered if it was the defroster that caused it.. I really doubt that it was caused from cab pressure... Ill be posting an update on this shortly. Hope ford replaces my window though!! Calling ford back first thing monday morning....

update from dec 11, 2020: ford was able to cover my rear window with the warrnty. The defroster was the reason it busted. So the warranty covered the defroster replacement. I bought the warranty for these reasons. It was much cheaper then paying out of pocket. I only paid a $100 deductible. Good to know they took care of it.. Releaf

my 2013 F150 SCREW that had it's 2nd failure of the rear glass caused by the defroster on a truck with less than 45,000 miles. The first was in 15' when the truck had just over 20,000 miles. I turned on my remote start to warm up the cab and de-frost the windows first thing in the morning while parked in my driveway. I loaded both my 1 and 3 year old boys into their car seats and went back in the house momentarily to grab my rain jacket. When I returned I noticed a significant amount of smoke and a small incipient fire 1-2" on the exterior weather-stripping of the rear glass. Smoke had entered the cab but was more significant on the exterior. The smoke in the video is what remained after I turned the truck off, batted the small fire out and watched the interior glass laminate explode and shatter with a sound equivalent to a small caliber handgun. I'm sure its not hard to imagine how a 1 and a 3 year old would react to such a load sound originating less than a foot from their heads. Seeing as how this wasn't the first time this happened I managed to grab my camera to show FORD that they have a faulty product and it is not the consumers responsibility to dish out $1,000 every time their truck owners care to look out their rear windows. This is a known problem, with hundreds of complaints posted on multiple forums, consumer complaint sites and the NHTSA. I would like to also share my opinion as a career firefighter that understands fire behavior and knows the chain of events that precedes a significant fire. This small incipient fire had the potential to be catastrophic. The fire originated at or the lower left trim/weather-strip on the passenger side rear glass more than likely where the contacts for the defroster align and transfer through the sliding glass. With the window trim acting as vertical fuel (flammable plastic/poly material) and given a bit more time, could have transitioned to portions of the interior cab putting both my kids who were restrained in a very bad situation. Had I stopped to use the restroom prior to going back out, or done anything to give the fire just a bit more time to reach it's potential this situation could have been much worse. I'm posting this in hopes that FORD issues a recall for a known faulty product.

rear window shattered rear window shattered

On feb.2015 on my way to work my back window shatters out of nowhere. After some research online I'm finding others have it happen to them. A lot of folks claim it's the defrost not going off ,but continues to heat, causing the window to shatter. Well mine was on that cold snowy night that it broke. I take my raptor and had it fixed under warranty with no problem and explained to the ford garage that if the defrost had anything to do with the window breaking that he be sure to disconnect it,cause my warranty will be up soon and I don't want this problem to reoccur only to be stuck with another shattered window and have to fight and fuss with y'all later down the road because the glitch or whatever it is should have been fixed in the first place! (Inhale) so. I'll be damned if my truck has 72,000 miles on it and on Jan.9 2017 the window shattered in my driveway after I started it with my remote on one cold morning. Not sure what's going to happen with this one just yet ,but I beg someone with ford to help get a recall on these trucks. I had two car seats in my backseat when this happened the second time. I'm praying this gets fixed before someone is faced with trying to get a child out of a car seat and it on fire !!!! Because I know if those windows are breaking before the fuses are blowing, it's only a matter of time before one of these trucks catch on fire ! Don't want on someone to be hurt, fix the problem. Recall these ford vehicles.

Ford needs to reimburse us for this cost. We had to pay for this defect out our own pocket. Not impressed with Ford's customer service.

rear window shattered

Driving to work and heard what I thought was a "rock" bouncing off my roof. Screamed and ducked and kept driving. Didn't think anything of it! Got to work and parked my truck in a secured parking garage. Didn't notice anything as it is dark when I get to work in the morning. I went to leave and saw this in my mirror. Instantly pissed off as I just bought the truck in November.. hopped out..didn't see where anything "hit" the window. So I drove home. Pissed the whole way. So I took a better look...standing at the bed it looks like the window was busted from the inside...so now how the hell does anything of this happen?! Called the dealer and this seems like it is going to be easier to just fix on my own. Has anyone had any luck?

rear window shattered

Just bought a Ford 2103 F150 FX4, I auto started my truck because the cold with rear defroster set for auto. Got into my truck and heard a loud pop only to see my back widow was shattered. Took it to Ford and they said my warranty wont cover it and now I'm forced to spend $600 on a new window! The place I'm getting my window fixed (not Ford) told me this is happening to a lot of people and of course there are hundreds of complaints on here. Ford is doing nothing about it. Ford needs to recall this and pay for damages. This is bull and Ford should be sued!! This is a function that you should be able to use on your vehicle and a safety concern! Any suggestions, please email me sknelly38@gmail.com

rear window shattered

While driving I heard a really loud POP like someone threw a rock at my truck. Turns out my rear window shattered. When I went to the dealership and explained what happened, his first response was, "Let me guess, F-150 right?". Not reassuring! Went to order the $872 window (installed), but was told that there are none available; with no listed date of availability. And of course that ford does not stand behind it. So I am forced to drive my truck with packaging tape hold the glass together until further notice.

Side note: Happened on a 30* frosty morning. Rear defrost was Not used.
