This 2003 Focus Wagon has suffered from excessive road noise for several years, and I always suspected the (rear wheel) bearings, but the dealer was reluctant to examine them during the warranty term and blamed the tires. Coincident with the installation of new tires, the noise has increased dramatically and it now appears that hoisting the car to install the tires has loosened a bearing. I have yet to resolve the matter but I am now fairly confident that this is a bearing problem. I am reporting this in the hope that it is useful to others. This model has ABS and rear wheel disc brakes.

the sound I was hearing when I was driving was a growling sound from the back of my car. It was getting louder and louder. Everyone that got into my car thought that I had studded tires on my car. It ends up being my wheel bearings. They were all bad. It was so bad that I was driving a car and the wheels were ready to fall off of it and I never knew. My boyfriend is a mechanic and had the hardest time replacing them. I gave the estimate of what it would cost to be fixed at a garage with labor. I paid about 250.00 in parts alone. he told me when he changed the wheel bearings that it looked like it came from the factory without any grease in it. He said that it was dry and that was why it was making that sound. My wheel could have fallen off and guess what.. this again is a recall issue for 01-02 but not for the 2003

Driving my car, a sudden grinding noise started, had trouble going over 50mi/hr. got to my garage and they said the bearings were shot, the seals had rotted. Well they said one day to fix, not a problem. Acutally after a week of being w/out my car they still can't get the right parts from Ford because Ford has redesigned this part so many times that the part for my car isn't listed anymore. They got in all new brake hubs with bearings and seals and that STILL won't work. It's heading into week 2 and I'm waiting on a seal that I had to find out about and tell the Ford Parts distributer about, they didn't know this part existed till I found out about it from my dealer. This is a HUGE problem for Ford, they need to get off their butts and take care of their parts situation
