CarComplaints.com Notes: The fourth generation Grand Cherokee took the relatively trouble-free run of the 3rd-generation and flipped the script.

From 2010 to 2011, complaints about the vehicle not starting increased 10-fold. In fact, the 2011 model year is riddled with engine problems and a defective TIPM might be to blame. The TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) distributes power to all the eletrical components in the vehicle, so when it starts acting funny so do numerous other components in the car. Orders for new TIPMs were so abundant that parts became scarce, prompting a class-action lawsuit claiming Chrysler ignored this obvious defect.

By 2012 complaints dropped back down by about 80%. Needless to say, if you see a used 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee on a lot just keep walking.

This is a really expensive problem. ( My bill is in Canadian Dollars) $1484.35 plus13% tax Car has only 34,545 KM

DANGEROUS!!! Potentially dangerous according to the Toronto Star newspaper article. SEE wheels section, Saturday October 4, 2014. Star says "Problem with the TIPM is that it could shut off the engine without warning at highway speeds" !!! Should I still drive the car? Is it safe for me and my Grand kids? Also mentions CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT

I've owned about 7 Jeeps over the last 27 years and will now never buy a Jeep again!!!

Grand Cherokee Larado 6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 57,000 miles

Started having problems with my 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee about two weeks ago. It wouldn't start, after a couple of tries it started. I bought a new battery, it didn't work, I bought a new FOB, had it programed, that didn't work. I was told from the dealer that I needed a TIPM, total integrated power module, that would cost me $1200. How can a module go out on a car that's not even 4 years old.

So I go online to see if any oneelse is having this problem and find out that there are a lot of people having this problem. I have 57000 miles on my truck and no warranty on it so I call Chrysler headquarter only to be told that there's nothing they can do for me. Chrysler should put a recall out on these TIPM because they know that the part is faulty.

My vehicle's push-to-start feature started malfunctioning. It would turn over multiple times but would not start. I removed the push button and started using the key. It turned over multiple times and finally started. This persisted for a week. After the first week it would no longer start using the key unless it was placed in neutral. This persisted throughout the second week. Finally, the truck went completely dead. I got a jump and took it to the dealer. They replaced the TIPM and now, a week later, it will not start again. This is definitely a pain in the ass.

Hello, I was browsing the internet after running into the faulty TIPM with my 2011 Grand Cherokee. I purchased a certified Pre-Owned vehicle from Buhler Bitter Dealership in Hazlet NJ in late January/ Feb 2014. This past Friday I brought my vehicle to the dealership to have the problem looked at. In return I was given a bill for over 1,500 dollars to fix the issue. They told me the issue was not a recall and was not covered by the limited warranty I was given. I already paid and had the vehicle fixed..

Thank you

Grand Cherokee Laredo X 5.7L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 39,590 miles

Purchased a chrysler certified used 2011 Laredo X (38K miles) with a 3 month 3000 mile warranty on it from Woodhouse Chrysler in April of 2014. Problems immediately with this chrysler certified Laredo. After much back and forth with purchasing dealer (woodhouse chrysler) and requests to return the vehicle Woodhouse did sell us an extended Chrysler Warranty at a fair price for this Jeep, we're suckers to have taken that deal. We've since had it to three different Chrysler dealers, a total of 5 dealer visits for which several problems continue to go without resolution. Will speak specifically to what appears to be TIPM issues based on what we've read in other posts. Suspected TIPM issues include: failure to start, extended starting efforts, odd wiper movement when not starting and lights flickering. Latest on this is from Hillview Chrysler 8/2014 in Greensburg PA was to replace a battery (battery showed full charge) telling us it was a "bad cell in these special gel batteries" which was the cause of all these problems. All of the pre-battery issues persist, every one of them (so frustrating). The battery wasn't covered under the warranty but given it was less then 3 years old they "helped us out," by cutting us a break so we only left we a $300 dollar bill for the battery instead of the $450 it should have been. Fortunately/Unfortunately for us we've continued to catch multiple instances of the problem on video. As time permits here we'll get the videos all posted and update as we get the Jeep back to the dealership again for what's been nearly a monthly visit. Hillview Chrysler had previously been great to us with a 2002 Grand Cherokee, fixed it right first time every time, exactly the opposite with this 2011 Grand, we've been sent home on two of the three visits with "well that is just how it is and let us know if it gets worse," type of responses. Not sure what to do, or where to take this thing. The hillview folks seem great but just cant fix a number of the issues.

#1 Odd Electric Issues: - Occasional spin only when starting, no start or extended start (Video) - Occasional “key has left the vehicle” message (Video) - Occasional fan speed setting issue (Video) - Clock frequently resets to 12:00 (Video) - Odd - No battery or electrical voltage monitoring though the check engine light has come on during a few of the failed starts. Hillview read and cleared the check engine codes on last visit suspecting they were due to the bad battery. (Video) - Headlights flickering (Video) - Wipers occasionally move one time on start up (Video) - Special Gel Cell Battery dead in less than 3 years - Radio volume control fails randomly, steering wheel controls cease to work when this happens as well. - Frustrating design item - the climate controls don't remember settings when off between starts. Each time you start and turn on climate it immediately defaults to defrost.

(stop reading here for TIPM / electrical, continue for other issues with this certified used grand in our 6 months of ownership.)

TIPM Aside Other Ongoing Issues with our Grand include: - Surging with steady pedal at various points between 30mph and 50mph, frequently very apparent at 40mph (Video). Odd surging as well on downhill grades after a downshift, we've yet to find a pattern to this. - Chrysler dealer acknowledged this, shared a PCM update was applied to our vehicle and at present that is all they can do. - Button on rear assembly near camera which locks doors stopped working after less than 5 uses. - Woodhouse Chrysler shared this item is considered a trim piece and not covered under the warranty they sold us a few weeks after purchase. We haven't had it repaired given the estimate of $400 dollars. - Front end noise, sounds like a bad wheel bearing. - Hillview Chrysler dealer shared it is likely a broken bead in tire, they then rotated tires and it persisted so at present they've shared the bearings are good and to let them know if it gets worse. - Occasional blue smoke out exhaust (Video) - Hillview Chrysler dealer shared with us it isn't uncommon for the 5.7 engine to use some oil. - Other: Interior ceiling separation above rubber door seals (the ceiling material is separating), seatbelt plastic container (the piece which slides up and down on frame worn through, passenger seatbelt doesn't always retract (Video) - Oddity: Lower Engine Cover has a large square Hole for oil drain and filter BUT there is no cover, this one open hole acts like a vacuum for dirt. (Video)

Positives: We do like the radio when the volume control is working (:-/) and it does about the same on fuel as our previous 4.0.

Other: Never wrote to a post like this about a vehicle or even searched for vehicle issues but, whew, the issues with this certified chrysler grand continue have just been so in your face and extensive we don't know where to turn for help.

Thanks!!!

Update from Dec 9, 2014: This vehicle is tearing our family apart, seriously, this vehicle is a lot of money and it sits and no one wants to drive it. I've put about 1800 miles on it since this posting. Weekly starting issues, dozens of videos, three attempts since this posting to have it addressed. Tried a new dealer entirely two weeks ago, they were a Chrysler Dealer (Victory Chrysler Delmont PA - www.victorychryslerdodgeram.net/) but shared they are not actually a Jeep dealer and don't feel comfortable working on it. The service gentleman was really friendly and acknowledged similar complaints from dodge owners however did not want to work on the jeep as they didn't have the experience with them. Shared he would do the new recall on it for the fuel issue if we wanted however parts are not available, this is all they would do. Thought it was interesting he did see a Chrysler ticket on our jeep (he could see our ongoing Chrysler help request in the system).

We continue to strike out, unbelieveable to horrible support for Chrysler across the board. Really couldn't be more upset. Watch for another update after the holidays. Lost so much time trying to get these issues addressed going to put a few more hours in and upload all of our videos to youtube, along with the actual dealer notes and Chrysler CASE NUMBER: 3065355.

Please please, if some from a Chrysler dealer reads these posts, is willing to tackle our issue and within a reasonable drive of the Pittsburgh area (100 miles or so) comment to us. We would love to get some good help here and then share some good results with this ridiculously large community of people with the same problems.

Update from May 26, 2015: Update 5/2015 Vehicle had the relay recall in 12/2014, it started better for about a month but a number of odd electrical issues persisted and odd surging more frequent. A couple weeks later hard and stuttering starts again. We have now had two tickets with Chrysler, one still ongoing with a case specialist. We've reported to NHTSA as well and are currently seeking legal guidance. In 16 months with this vehicle it has seen 8 dealer visits for the exact same problems with no resolution. Latest visit just two weeks ago and now alternator and fuel pumps are expected as causes. Somewhere in the past recent months we've kind of just forgot about it, so burnt out I guess plus work on my end leaves little time to deal with this. The vehicle sits and no one drives it. We need to seek legal action, what a mess. This vehicle is garbage, Chrysler support is useless, dealers guess at the problems.

Update from Jun 9, 2015: Videos wasting so much time trying to get this vehicle right, put an extra hour into posting videos of the problems. Appreciate any help.

I got rid of my Ford Edge to go to a Jeep because I thought there were a better running SUV. I guess I was wrong! This major of a problem should NOT be happening on such a newer vehicle with less than 64000 miles. And to top it off it wasn't covered under my warranty because the MFG Warranty expired in 2/2014. This appears to be a widespread problem with 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokees (as well as other vehicles). There should be a recall for defective TIPM module units. This expense is extreme for a fairly new vehicle that I have taken great care of to-date. I want Chrysler Jeep to rebate my cost for this replacement.

We bought this Jeep used in October of 2013. Since then, no problems at all - love the car. Starting yesterday, the car was having a hard time starting. It would act like it would, the whole car would shake for a minute and then it would shut off. After a couple of tries it started and I drove it home and it drove fine. When I got it home, we went to dinner and it worked fine then. The next morning when I was leaving for work, same problem - wouldn't start. I tried 5 times and never got it to start.

Started searching and found that this seems to be a nationwide problem. I am very disappointed that such an expensive and new car is having such issues and the company is doing NOTHING about it!

Sad that Chrysler knows about this problem and pretend they don't. Not helping in anyway with a recall of this vehicle. As of now my Jeep was towed to dealer for repair. Having a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is like having a possessed care that has no remedy. I've had a fuel pump replaced, trouble starting car, car shuts off in the stream of traffic while driving, had it towed because it would not start at all. When the car is diagnosed it appears that there is nothing wrong or it says another part is faulty. I was told by the dealership they have to keep the car and wait until the TIPM acts up then they can get a diagnosis, the problem is it malfunctions sporadically so who knows how long that will take just getting a diagnosis. In addition to that pain the part is on national back order. Meanwhile I will have to rent a car at $369/week and still make my car and car insurance payments!!!! I have had it with Chrysler and their bull sh*t!!!

Since purchasing this vehicle the engine has shut off several times while driving on the FREEWAY, the power windows and door locks intermittently do not work, and now the vehicle does not want to start a good majority of the time. It will take up to 8-10 tries at times. One method that sometimes works is to use remote start, however even that is failing.

Was told there was one (or more) relays on the TIPM that failed and the cost of repairs would be $1200.00. Absolutely disgusted with Jeep. My last vehicle (2007 Wrangler Sahara Unlimited) developed the "wobble of death" and was unknowing replaced by an equally unsafe vehicle.

My wife and I's Jeep continues to have issues. Back in march we were stranded in the Outerbanks due to the suspension and 4x4 given out while driving. Then after returning home the Jeep refused to start and sometimes would not shut off.

Now the same problem. Jeep won't start and now the fuel pump won't shut off. At what point will this be resolved? You are not able to get the parts since they are on backorder and even if you do get the parts in it will cost you well over $1000 to have repaired. Why should we have to pay for a part that everyone one knows is junk? Then what? The new part breaks again since it is the same one that is in there now? And we pay again? Crazy.

Will never purchase another Jeep vehicle and have taken back all the praise I have given Jeep to people I know. Now I recommend not buying one since they could care less about this.

A couple months ago I started having issues with my Jeep not starting. It would crank but not start. Usually after 2-3 tries it would start. The past week though it was becoming more and more difficult to cold start. Some days the only way to get it to start was to use the remote start and even that didn't work everyday. I researched the issue on the internet and quickly realized that I was having issues with the TIPM. I took it to my local Jeep dealer yesterday and told them I thought it was the TIPM and said I'm sure you know all about this since it seems to be a widespread issue. They did tests on it and told me the wiring to the fuel pump was bad. I was surprised that it wasn't the TIPM and gave the go ahead to fix it.

In my research I had come across the work around of: "Many dealerships have agreed to to repair the problem with a $58.00 - 4 way switch with relay Mopar #68142156AA, $0.76 fuse, an $12.00 fuse holder Mopar #68217670AA. The parts are used to rewire the fuel pump circuit to TIPM with a stand-alone outside relay. This new relay is used to turn-on the fuel pump." After I got home I looked at the bill and realized that this is exactly what they had done. All 3 of those exact part numbers were used to fix my Jeep. Rather than admitting that yes it was the TIPM, they just said my wiring was bad. To top it off, I paid way to much for this simple fix.

I Purchased my 2011 Jeep about a month ago the problem i have is getting my car to start.

It randomly will not turn on or barely turn on and then turn of about 3 or 4 times.

At first I thought I was holding the key down too long because that's what it would sound like but id let go right away

and it would continue. Dealer wants me to purchase the extended warranty but i don't feel i should when i haven't even made my first payment and I'm already having issues. I have read that many jeep owners are having the same issues which means this is clearly a faulty TIPM that Chrysler should fix asap. I feel the dealer knew there was an issue. either way i don't feel i am responsible to pay anything for this problem.
