CarComplaints.com Notes: The fourth generation Grand Cherokee took the relatively trouble-free run of the 3rd-generation and flipped the script.

From 2010 to 2011, complaints about the vehicle not starting increased 10-fold. In fact, the 2011 model year is riddled with engine problems and a defective TIPM might be to blame. The TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) distributes power to all the eletrical components in the vehicle, so when it starts acting funny so do numerous other components in the car. Orders for new TIPMs were so abundant that parts became scarce, prompting a class-action lawsuit claiming Chrysler ignored this obvious defect.

By 2012 complaints dropped back down by about 80%. Needless to say, if you see a used 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee on a lot just keep walking.

Over the past month we had an intermittent problem with starting the car, in the past week the problem occurred on a daily basis. My 18 year old daughter is the primary driver of the car. Concern is that she is stranded on the road or the car stalls out while driving and she is injured. After stating that the TIPIM was not a major problem so the item is not being recalled by Chrysler I was advised the item is back ordered. Not happy with the cost and no discount being provided by the dealership. So much for quality product and standing behind the car.

This problem is really dangerous and annoying. I bought my vehicle new in Dec 2010. Since buying it I have a handful of times where my jeep did not start on the first try and just kept cranking. But it always started the second time. All of the sudden one morning my vehicle took 14 or 15 tries to start. I was out of town working when it happened and had no option other than hope and pray it would continue to work for the following 4 days until I got home. Each morning and each afternoon for four days it took anywhere from 5 - 10 minutes to get it started. It took 20-40 tries with breaks for starter to cool off. (I'm surprised the battery did not drain too).

The dealership diagnosed it as the TIPM (I'm sure you know what that is if you are reading this). I can't believe Chrysler won't recall for this problem considering how many people seem to have the issue! Ridiculous. I will never buy another Chrysler product after all the issues I have had with my Jeep!

My Jeep had a dead battery twice in a week and had a couple rough starts, replaced the battery at a cost of $200.00. The day after I put the new battery in had another rough start then a stall but finally started. Drove a couple miles and stopped at a store. My Jeep started and then stalled and would not restart. Had to have it towed to the Jeep dealer...another expense!!

I think it is not correct and even worse not safe to have a recall problem that you know it's a recall and it has not been recalled yet. What are you guys waiting for, a car to hay wired on the road and kill someone and then have to pay for a death of an innocent person, just cause you guys don't want to pay for something that is a total recall? This should be fixed before a family has a bad taste in their mouth. It will cost you more then fixing the problem.

In February, 2012, I owned a 2006 Dodge Charger which was having computer issues, wouldn't start, it was a complete nightmare, I paid to replace 2 various computer components and still was left sitting dead in the water, so my husband and I decided to trade for a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo.

We've been very pleased with the vehicle until Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014. I got in my Jeep to pick up lunch and it wouldn't start, it sounded as if things were running but it wouldn't turn over. I had to pay $75 for a tow to the dealer, and they advised me it was probably the TIPM. As I groaned, because of the computer issues previously with my charger, I began to search the web. Looks like this is a common problem and a partial recall for a fuel relay is forthcoming on Oct. 24. I called my dealer and discussed my findings online as to TIPM issues and they said they would certainly look at it. I have waited until today, Oct. 17 to get a determination as to what the exact problem. They tell me it is the complete TIPM unit just not the fuel relay and it will cost $1,190 to complete the repair and install a new TIPM unit. I called Chrysler immediately to plead my case, as I am paying for a daughter to go to university and $1,190 is a lot of money to me right now. They were completely apologetic but no help whatsoever.

I have no way of verifying of what the dealer is telling me, I ask what method made the determination as to the complete unit and not just the recall issue and was told it was through several computer checks. So here I am, even though I have extended warranty coverage, which they tell me is completely worthless in this matter. By the end of the day, I will be less $1,190 and with the memory of the computer issues with my Dodge Charger continued after I paid for new components..I am less than thrilled, and not at all confident that this will be the end of subject.

Thank you for this forum, I realize I am in good company from what I've read.

It all started with what we thought was a bad key fob. After about 3 trips to the dealer (Don Marshall Chrysler in Somerset,Ky.) they finally suggested that we replace the key fob. That seemed to take care of the problem for a little while then it progressed to not starting on the 1st, 2nd, and sometimes 3rd try. It just kept getting worse until it might take up to 10 tries before it would fire up . Then it got to when it WOULD start it would immediately die.

About 3 weeks ago my wife was leaving the driveway of our house and the thing just quit while she was going through the gate. I'm just thankful that she wasn't on the highway at speed when it happened as she had our young son with her as well. About 2 days later the battery was dead when my wife got in it to leave from work. As I was away from home working and she needed a vehicle she took it back to the dealer (Don Marshall Chrysler in Somerset,Ky.) where they proceeded to install a new battery at the rip-off price of over $300.00!!

About a week later I figured out why the battery had gone dead so quickly. I drove it to my in-laws house and when I got out of it I heard the fuel pump continuing to run even after the engine had been shut off. My wife apparently hadn't noticed the sound of the fuel pump running when she had parked it that morning to go in to work and it had ran all day until it killed the battery. Had it at the dealer yesterday (NOT RIP-OFF Don Marshall Chrysler) and they diagnosed it as a faulty Fuel Pump Relay switch. (duh) I told them what it was before we took it to them. They said that until they could get the part to fix it with that I could just tap on top of the TIPM to get the fuel pump to shut off.( I had been taking the battery cable off to get it to stop.) When we got it home, sure enough, I tapped the TIPM and it immediately shut the fuel pump off. WHOO HOO!! Well guess what? Yep......the damn thing wouldn't start at all this morning!!

Screw you Chrysler, and all of the useless Jeep Grand Cherokees you rode in on!! Or maybe you had to push them in? Never again will I own a piece of crap Chrysler product. This was the 5th and final one.

We had problems at the cottage and couldn't get the car started for 15 minutes one time and 5 minutes another. On coming home the engine died out driving down the street and then again 2 days later when my daughter had taken the car to a Dr's appointment, This is a serious problem and our dealer has had no reply from Chrysler Canada as to a recall or paying for the TIPM replacement. We did hear on the news the week before that there was to be a recall for this but nobody at Chrysler will acknowledge the issue.

This vehicle is only a few years old and yet I'm having to make an almost $1500 replacement on it. I find this absolutely horrible. I bought this vehicle because it's supposed to be reliable and last awhile. For this to be such a significant problem and there's been nothing done about it from Chrysler is embarrasing.

Apparently this is an electrical issue with wires going back after only three years. From the dealer's mechanic it was stated the wires just go bad after a time, But I would have never thought after only 3 years I would have to shell out half a grand for faulty wires.

My wife calls and tells me the vehicle won't start. Being somewhat mechanically inclined, I think perhaps it's the battery. I asked her to have a colleague jump start it to get it home. This guy jumps the car and it turns over but does not start. After work, I go to her work and attempt to reset the computer by taking the positive off the battery. This does not work. We go ahead home (in the pouring rain). I then find the fuse jumper fix suggested to be M6 to M25. I plugged a small wire in and viola, it starts. I have my wife drive it home. I then fashion two add a circuits attempting to make it functional to drive to a dealer.

I contact my local dealer with all the internet info I have (NHTSA number, websites explaining the issue) and he blows me off. I explain that in September 2014 Chrysler issued a recall which is to be executed October 24, 2014. He says that that cannot be true. He then calls me back to tell me about a fuel relay recall. I explained that that is exactly what the website that I sent him said.

So I have a vehicle that has been down for four days, I am not sure if I can get it to the dealer and it will cost out the nose because they don't know anything yet.

Buying this vehicle at Car Max was a great experience. But they had to jump start it so we could test drive, that should have been a sign of things to come. After several instances of the engine start-up problems we replaced the battery. But after just a couple of days the problem persisted stranding my wife at the grocery store and at the mall. This is the worst situation I feared as I work 5 hours from where we live and I can't rescue my wife every time she has problems. I thought Jeep was a reliable vehicle, but now we have lost confidence in the brand. And after reading about the worst model year being 2011 and how Jeep has ignored the problem, I don't intend on purchasing any more Jeep products in the future. I just want to repair this vehicle as cheap as possible and go back to my GM products for reliability. Service is one of my major concerns for my vehicles. My Wife and I drive more than 60,000 miles a year combined, and don't need this kind of trouble. I am very disappointed with Jeep after reading all the complaints on this forum.

Grand Cherokee Overland 5.8L V8

So I am the owner of a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland and I was having a problem with the TIPM. I definitely had no idea what that was before this all started. A few weeks ago when I tried starting my car it would just click and it would not start but I turned it off and restarted it and everything was working fine. This problem started getting worse and I thought the battery was dying. I had this Jeep for 3 years and I figured this was a simple fix. So I bought the battery and installed it myself but unfortunately that didn't solve the problem, it actually seemed like it got worse. One time the car started and as I started pulling out of my parking space the engine started to sputter and I had to turn off the engine and restart again but this time it wouldn't restart! So there I was halfway out of a parking spot and my car wouldn't start. Cars started flying by me and honking at me and I was starting to cause traffic but finally, after multiple attempts, I was able to start it and get out of there. I immediately scheduled and appointment with Manhattan Jeep Service to check this out.

When I brought my Jeep in for service the guy that helped me, Joe, told me I would need to leave my car at least one day for them to be able to diagnose the problem which he said should cost me $150 just for him to look at it. I have the extended warranty but he said that didn't cover the diagnostic fee but he waived the fee anyway and arranged for me to be taken to the local rental car lot, they would cover the rental. Joe wasn't able to get back to me for 2 days. When he finally got back to me he told me that my warranty covers this piece but because Chrysler was announcing a recall they would not pay for the repair. He also said that Chrysler would not pay for the repair because they had not yet initiated the recall and this was all speculation at this point. He started telling me about this TIPM and how it is a very expensive part and I would have to pay for it which I refused to do. He then told me that I would have to pay $300 for him to put my car back together and return it to me with the defective part still installed and I would also be liable for the rental car payment. After a tense back and forth on which he repeatedly insulted me but insisted he wasn't insulting me, he agreed to do the repair as a "1x only goodwill policy" but I would have to pay a $100 deductible for the repair. I agreed and I picked up my car and now it seems to be working fine. After researching this problem further it seems like it is a manufacturing defect and Chrysler has announced a recall.

I think anyone that has this problem should take their car in for a repair immediately and anyone that had to pay for this repairs should be reimbursed. Thanks for listening.
