CarComplaints.com Notes: An increasing number of Toyotas are experiencing excessive oil consumption and the 2007 Camry seems to be leading the charge.

Owners are reporting that their engines are deprived of oil halfway through their maintenance schedules and in some cases the damage is so bad that entirely new engines need to be installed, paid out of pocket. The issue may be a result of defective piston rings.

Toyota has issued a TSB for this problem, but maintains their stance that vehicles equipped with a 2AZ-FE engine are burning through a “normal” amount of oil.

The dashboard on my car is really sticky and soft. i cant clean it because everything gets stuck on it and if you hit it with something (like finger nails) chunks of it comes off, almost like its melting. Its not a hard surface like most cars, its soft sticky nasty feeling.

The dash and now the steering wheel is very sticky when the sun hits it or gets to hot. I live in Florida so it is always hot. Dust, dirt, bugs, lint everything will stick to it and you can't clean it off. It is gross!

Camry LE 2.4L

I received an extended warranty letter. I waited until spring as they noted in letter to allow for parts to arrive. I called last July 2014 to ask them about and they told me that I would have to bring in so that they could inspect. I brought into dealership and they agreed that it was bad and said that they would be fixing it. Lady that inspected said that they would be calling in a few days to set up an appointment with me.

Two weeks later no call, so I called them again and man on phone said not sure why lady told me a few days, that it will be a while before parts came in.

A month later, I went to the dealership shop and checked again and with disgust on his face, he said that they don't know when they would receive but would call me as soon as they came in. It is now January 2016 and still no call.

Apparently Toyota decided to back out of their warranty extension for this issue, which explains it all with all of the issues that I have had with this vehicle.

This problem is very dangerous because the sun shining down on the dash about blinds you . Also if you try to cover it with something the material sticks to the dash. It is very sticky.

I took my 2007 Camry into Toyota dealer complaining of sticky dashboard in 2011 and they took pictures of the sticky situation and informed me their corp office would NOT approve replacement in full but we'd share cost and I believe my cost was $600 at that time. They did inform me if ever RECALLED, I would get reimbursed. Never heard from them again, and it turned me off to Toyota, after owning 6 of their vehicles in my lifetime. I traded in that car in 2013 for a NON-Toyota new car!!! I believe, since I submitted a survey regarding this, to Toyota in Sept. 2011, they should now reimburse me the cost!!!!!!! They should live up to their reputation from years back. I could not save paperwork from what I spent 4 years ago but am sure they have my payment stated in their system.

The dash is so bad it's reflecting in my windshield.... very distracting. It's only where the sun beams down on it. My husbands finger nails have left marks. If you touch it at all you will stick to it and leave a mark. I bought this car brand new in 06. It was my dream car and now the interior, well I'll just say its really bad!!!!!

Camry LE 2.1L V4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 22,000 miles

This melting dashboard has been gradually getting worse and causes a glare that actually interferes with an adequate view of cars, pedestrians, signs, etc. which will eventually cause a collision.

This same car, a 2007 Camry, has a problem with excessive oil consumption. Besides the normal oil changes, I have had to use at least 6 quarts of extra oil (with only 20,000 miles) to prevent engine failure.

Toyota has sent us 2 letters about these problems and claims by the spring or summer, they will have the equipment ready to remedy these problems, but I have severe doubts they will actually repair these problems that:

1) Are dangerous to the drivers

2) Can result in engine failure.

I will never buy another Toyota unless they show good faith and fix these defects.

deffective dash melting, sticky and deteriorating

I HAVE FOUND MANY OTHER CAMRY 2007 OWNERS COMPLAIN ABOUT THE SAME DASH PROBLEM AND WHEN I WENT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER REP AT ADRIEL TOYOTA DEALER IN DORADO, PUERTO RICO WHERE I HAVE ALL MAINTANCE SERVICE THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS A 1 YEAR PERIOD WHERE THOSE THAT COMPLAINED HAD THEIR DASH REPLACED AT NO COST, BUT SINCE I COMPLAINED WHEN I WAS TOLD BY THE TECHNICIAN THAT HAD TO REMOVE THE DASH TO REPLACE A/C EVAPORATOR WAS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DASH DAMAGE BECAUSE IT WAS ALREADY DETERIORATED AND DAMAGED. IF ANY ONE KNOWS OF A CLASS ACTION SUIT RELATED TO THE DASH PROBLEM PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

Update from Feb 26, 2015: How did the person who receive the letter from Toyota to replace his dash, Who did he send his complaint to? Thanks

martin albarran

Update from Mar 6, 2015: Yes!!!!! Just received a Toyota Warranty Enhancement Notification that extends the warranty and will replace the dash of my car at no cost and there are a bunch of other Toyotas with this problem that are also listed in the notice. Toyota is sending these notifications to the owners with instructions of how to proceed,

For several yrs. now the dashboard has been sticky cant clean it very well cloth gets stuck to it. Yesterday I noticed a small chunk missing just fell off the dash board.

There is a weird reflection problem also, in the windshield I believe its due to the shinny melting dash board.

Camry Hybrid

  • 80,000 miles

I was totally shocked to receive your email describing the sticky dashboard issue. I had been noticing it worsening over the past 3-4 years and thought it was only me because of my car's dark gray interior and the fact that it's spent a lot of time in the sun. I tried all kinds of remedies which only left permanent etchings and I still have a sticky dashboard. My car was one of the 1st Camry hybrids on the road, which I anxiously purchased 5 days after release on May 5, 2006. I have just learned to live with this and other cosmetic problems because it's a good running car.

I never received any service bulletin or notification that Toyota was aware of this condition as a problem. I hope I am notified if this lawsuit prevails.
