CarComplaints.com Notes: The second generation Durango was introduced in 2004 and instantly came under fire for, well, catching on fire.

From 2004-2006 electrical overloading in the driver's side instrument panel caused numerous reports of interior fires. The interior infernos became so commonplace that Chrysler eventually issued a recall.

The problems didn't stop there, however. Owners of the recalled vehicles complained about being treated unfairly and given take-it-or-leave-it low ball settlement offers. "They offered me $2000 under NADA retail as a settlement," said one owner, "and have been rude and hostile to deal with." Nothing says awesome service like treating your customers rudely after their cars have already caught on fire.

When filling the gas tank, gas will spray out of the tank. Sometimes the pump will automatically shut off, other times it requires manual assistance. According to www.motortrend.com, there have been two recalls for this problem - one in 2005 and the other in 2009. When calling Dodge, they state that those recalls may have been "VIN specific" and they do not have any recalls in the system for my vehicle.

Dodge Durango fuel tank inlet check valve - safety recall: I own a 2005my Dodge Durango that has had issues with fuel spilling out of the filler tube after filling at a gas station. This occurs every time the tank is filled, resulting in 1-2 seconds backflow out of the fuel tank and running down the side of the vehicle or onto my hands. My brother-in-law, who works at Chrysler, owns a 2008 my Durango with the same issue. I have information on Chrysler safety recall H45 and E01 that seem to be directly related to this issue. When taken to the dealer for investigation, they did nothing and claimed there was no recall available for this issue and provided me with an estimate to replace the fuel tank (~$900). I would like my issue included under the terms of the other related safety recalls. Please contact me.

Gas has started overflowing/spraying out when filling up. Pump stops and seconds later it happens. The first time it happened it sprayed some fuel on one of my boys who was standing by me. Thankfully, it didn't get in his eye. I first thought it was the pump but since realized its the vehicle. This seems to be fairly common issue and I have seen the two recalls on this due to the tanks inlet check valves not shutting properly. The recalls cover vehicles made through Nov. 04. my Durango was made Dec 04 so Dodge won't touch it.

Fuel spills out when refueling. While refueling, the tank will fill, the gas pump handle will 'click' off, then a second later fuel sprays out onto the gas pump, vehicle, ground and anyone standing nearby. The problem may happen several fill-ups in a row, or may skip a fill-up, and do it again the next time. Fueling slowly, very slowly, does not stop the fuel spray spillage. This happens at any fuel station in at least 6 states now.

When fueling, approx. 1 to 2 quarts of gas burps out of the fuel filler tube. This occurs regardless of how fast or slow the fuel is dispensed. Seems to not be venting properly. I see DaimlerChrysler recall # E01 and H45 have been issued, however my manufacture dates do not fall within range. Can my VIN info be checked and/or are there any other options available to have this repaired by the dealer without cost?

Chrysler recall H45 - fuel tank filler inlet check valve (gas spits back at you and doesn't stop flow from the pump when full). We researched the symptoms and found some information at the time. We approached a local mendon, MA dealer about the issue and were told "there is no recall and your car is out of warranty". now we found a letter from Chrysler acknowledging the issue and found our vehicle was manufactured during the recall time frame (9/04 vs. Recall dates for 2005 model through November 2004). Tank has had these issues for some time now, 3/2010 is a "best recollection" as to when we first noticed.

I had my 2005 Durango into the local dealership due to fuel shooting out of my gas tank when I filled it up with gas. I was told after diagnostic tests that it was a faulty inlet check valve and that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. I was quoted $1200 to have the tank replaced. I don't believe that I should have to pay for the tank replacement. After much online research, I see that this has been an ongoing issue on Dodge/Chrysler vehicles for the past several years. It is my understanding that my '05 Durango VIN didn't fall under the 2005 and 2009 recall, but that other vehicles were later added to the 2009 recall. This is my main source of transportation. I have two small children and feel this is safety hazard due to a manufacturing defect therefore, they should be the ones to fix it at no charge to me. Thank you in advance for your prompt and immediately attention to resolve this problem.

The car's fuel tank fails to shut-off, I.e. it doesn't appropriately respond to the shut-off mechanism. Gasoline overflows from the tank, sometimes in a spills out sometimes it flows out! it doesn't matter if I use the lowest setting on the gas pump or if I manually fill the tank, once full it overfills every single time I'm refueling and gas pours out of the fill spout, running down the body of the vehicle, on my hand on my clothes and on the ground! it's not just dangerous with simple static electricity, it's a fire waiting to happen!

When filling with gas fuel will come back out the filling spout and spill gas all over the car and ground, and sometimes the person filling it. Dodge has had recall on some of the 2005 for the same problem but ours does not fall into their range. This seems to be a big safety concern with fuel going on me, the car, and the ground.
