Grand Caravan 3.2L

While driving down the road the car shut off and nothing was working. Pulled the car over into a driveway, put the car in park and restarted the vehicle.

Sometimes the car has issues starting up at all for no reason. When I pump the gas, it will usually start after the second or third try, but the really terrifying thing is that while driving, usually soon after starting up, THE VAN WILL SUDDENLY SHUT OFF FOR NO REASON. All power is lost, which means that no matter where I am, in the middle of an intersection or along a road, I can't accelerate, keep the car moving and the power steering shuts down completely. The car is just OFF, yet still in the middle of the road.

I have already had the ignition/key recall installed, and it still happens on a pretty regular basis. We've taken it to a dealer and a separate auto repair shop and neither can find the source of the problem. This is an extremely dangerous situation. I have kids in my car more often than not, and thankfully it's never happened in the middle of a busy intersection, but if it did, it could have devastating consequences. I just wanted to know if anyone else has dealt with this, if a source of the problem was found and a solution presented.

Grand Caravan LS 3.3V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 138,000 miles

When driving 70mph down the freeway and suddenly all power is lost, except for all the ACC position lights on the dash, the headlights go out and the engine completely shuts down...a few seconds pass and power restores itself. Recall for the WIN module was completed but still the engine will shut down while driving. This is very dangerous! The dealer service manager basically dismisses my concerns out of hand and tells me he will look at the continuing problem but I already know I will be sold a power module that they already know is defective. I want this service manager to put his children/grandchildren in this van and drive it for a week! This is very dangerous and it is only a matter of time before someone will be severely injured or worse, killed!

As a Dodge owner of a Grand Caravan, from the time I brought the vehicle there were issues. First it started with the vehicle turning itself off and did start back. So the dealership fix it. Then it was the brakes and rotors on the front end. Fix , repair, issues again, then issues again, again, and again. So we finally paid out of pocket and had them fixed correctly by a private mechanic. Not even three months into it, the electric doors begin to screw up, had to take it to three different dodge dealerships. After a year of complaining, finally a recall came out and they agree that it was the problem. Fix for now..... So many other issues with this van later on. But I decided not to complain to DODGE COMPANY.. Boy do I regret it now....it's been almost 4 years now, I still have issues with the engine cutting off while driving. this has gone on for awhile, then recall come out saying it's the engine switch, so now we are waiting on the it, still... When I have did some research and ask some people with computer knowledge on vehicles and they say by the engine cutting off while driving can cause issues with the TIPM part (computer).

I have taken it so many times to the dealership for this reason for the engine shutting itself off, they would brush it off it's the battery, got new battery then it happen again... Then took it back again, no engine light on, then they can't diagnose any issues. Now warranty is out.. Still no part for the recall engine switch.... 2015.

Now that the engine is still shutting itself off, dealership is now saying its the TIPM part which is $1200. or more... I believe it has been the issue the whole time, so Dodge needs to have a recall on this part before someone is kill... I worry about it happening to my family.. I have three children. It's our only vehicle.. As of today still no part available... Call Dodge --- no help from them... They need to have a recall on the TIPM PART before its to late...

My son drives the van, and this happened the other night on his way home. Thank God he was almost home. We will be taking the car in but now the question is....just how much more do we want to put up with? I will not let him drive it at night, too risky. We bought this car new from the dealership, paid too much money for it, and even though it's paid for I am looking to get at least another 4 years out it.

He had a 1995 Toyota 4 Runner, and we were dumb enough to sell that thinking this van would be more economical and safer for him to drive. That Toyota was 19 years old and had less problems than this thing does. Why? Can they no longer make cars? Do they no longer care? The problems that his Toyota had were age related, the van isn't even 10 years old, is that too much to ask for? Is it now a year long investment for a car? If that's the case then mass transit will be all anyone can afford.

I'll let you know what we do or how much this costs to fix. My biggest issue though, who do I sell this car to? I can't sell it privately because I don't want someone getting hurt. I can't donate it for the same reasons. Any dealership we go to is going to be more money than I want to spend.

Why do I worry about this and they don't? I didn't make the car, I bought it. Now I feel stuck with a death trap.
