CarComplaints.com Notes: The Dodge Intrepid, Stratus & other Chrysler sedans are infamous for oil sludge problems with the 2.7L V6 engine. If someone offers to sell you a 2.7L V6 model, it's only worth the price of the scrap metal it's going to shortly turn into.

NOTE: Only the 2.7L V6 has the oil sludge problem. Our "Avoid like the Plague" designation is ONLY for models with the 2.7L V6 engine. All other available engines are very reliable with no major problems.

Even with regular maintenance, the oil sludge defect eventually destroys the 2.7L engine typically around 80,000-100,000 miles. The only true fix we know about is to put in the larger 3.2L engine, which has a great reputation.

This issue was never deemed a safety defect by the Feds, so there was no recall. In the end, Chrysler got away with FOUR YEARS worth of defective 2.7L V6 engines in their sedans.

hi

so i have intrepid 2.7, one day the alternator stop working, i took car to mechanic, he put a new alternator and from that day heat is coming from the windshield, not from front, AC is also not working including the defrost, which is a great problem in winter, when i unplug the battery, and then plug back again, then the air start coming from windshield, then from front vents, and then from underneath, and then transfer back to windshield air, and heat will come if the button is on heat, and if it is reset once it wont transfer to the fan, and if it once reset on fan then it will not transfer to the heat. it is not the front buttons where the problem is, it is something else, mechanics cant find the problem, Plz reply ASAP. THANK U

Intrepid ES 3.2L

  • Automatic transmission

I have had to replace the A/C twice in this piece of junk. At a $1000 each time this is very expensive. Cost of ownership on this vehicle has been higher than any of the past six vehicles my wife and I have owned.

Let Chrysler go bankrupt. They can't produce a reliable product.

A/C quit working (no cold air, smelled like manure when the air was blowing in). Took it in & was told that the evaporator had "a hairline crack," which meant replacing the evaporator. More problems followed.
