CarComplaints.com Notes: The Dodge Intrepid, Stratus & other Chrysler sedans are infamous for oil sludge problems with the 2.7L V6 engine. If someone offers to sell you a 2.7L V6 model, it's only worth the price of the scrap metal it's going to shortly turn into.

NOTE: Only the 2.7L V6 has the oil sludge problem. Our "Avoid like the Plague" designation is ONLY for models with the 2.7L V6 engine. All other available engines are very reliable with no major problems.

Even with regular maintenance, the oil sludge defect eventually destroys the 2.7L engine typically around 80,000-100,000 miles. The only true fix we know about is to put in the larger 3.2L engine, which has a great reputation.

This issue was never deemed a safety defect by the Feds, so there was no recall. In the end, Chrysler got away with FOUR YEARS worth of defective 2.7L V6 engines in their sedans.

First, the check engine light came on. I took it to the dealer where I got it from to find out that the egr valve needed to be changed, did this. Then I drove it for 1 week and the check engine light came on again, took it back to the dealer to find out that there is a problem with the crank shaft and that it will be very costly to have it repaired. All of this happened when I was driving it. The car began to shake and I got very scared. I only had the car for 3 months and in the 3 months all of these problems have erupted. I need some justice in getting these problems addressed so that the car can be fixed without cost to me when checking the internet and finding out that this is a major problem with these cars. It is something that Dodge knows that these cars have those problems and they are not honoring helping the owners fix them.

I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid that blew a rod at 72,000 miles with no warning. We replaced the engine for about $3,000 and two weeks ago at 102,000 miles I started to hear a rapping sound that was probably another rod, but before the engine could blow another rod something in the timing snapped, so now I am left with a lawn ornament that I can't afford to fix and I am still paying for. Not to mention the various other items we have had to replace like the A/C condenser for $600 and the speed sensors, that was another $300. This car is the biggest lemon I have ever bought.

The car has had A/C problems. Electrical problems. Window problems. Transmission problems. And the 2.7 motor has been out of service since 2003! I need help. I still owe $8000 plus on this thing and I have not been able to use it since the fall of 2003. Thank you.

1999 Dodge Intrepid water pump and timing chain failed. The vehicle would not start while at the gas station. The vehicle never ran hot or made loud noises and there were no indications of a problem. The consumer was informed per service dealer that the engines had serious problems. The consumer felt that maybe in was not necessary to replace the entire engine at 59,500 miles. Chrysler was not willing to refund the consumer some or all of the monies spent on repairs. The A/C evaorator coil, fan resistor and trunk lock master cylinder which were all in perfect working order pror to being serviced at the dealership failed to work properly after vehicle was pick up from service. Dealership claimed problems were unrelated.

Consumer was unable to shift to 3rd gear. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. The vehicle has a triptronic shift which allows the driver to drive fully automatic or manually shift with just a touch. When the temperature dropped below twenty degrees the shifter became frozen solid and the consumer was unable to shift out of park until the outside temperature was above freezing. Because of this feature this malfunction the triptronic feature is no longer accessible. The vehicle also has air conditioning problems that limit it's ability to cool the vehicle on days with high humidity.

In the summer of 2003, A/C failed to blow cold air. Dealership tested the system and found no leak, but for a fee, would further test the system. No repairs were done due to price of service. In the summer of 2004, still had no A/C, and dealership has told me the evaporator coil has failed to operate. They want approximately $1300 to fix the problem. I will not go to their service as I have found an independent mechanic who will fix the problem for approximately $800. I have had the transmission recall fixed, the driver's seat bolt recall fixed, and the right front window motor replaced. All of these things have been found defective by many customers as found on this web site. Are refunds available for these common complaints? I'm tired of spending hard earned money to fix what apparently seems like manufacturer flaws.

Driver power window motor failed twice, now the window has to be held in place for it to roll up straight and go into place. Also, plastic on driver door under black 'speaker' cracked with no impact. Passenger rear door entire interior door assembly has separated from the metal and has to be 'popped' back in repeatedly. Air conditioner system fails yearly. Multiple reasons. Trunk leaks terribly. Rear air/heat vents don't blow air anymore and the car isn't even 4 years old!

Steering: I started to feel a slight binding in the steering when trying to return wheel to center from a turn. It got progressively worse to the point where I occasionally had to "wrestle" the steering wheel back to center position. It also feels loose, suspension rattles and I've got 4 inches of play at center. Took it to the dealer and was informed it would cost $1200 to fix. Service rep tried to explain that this was pretty common nowadays with the sealed racks and not just Dodge. I've never experienced this type of failure in all of the years I've owned cars and think this is just a poor design that Dodge is keeping mum about. The vehicle is only 3 years old with mostly highway driving. I'm purchasing a used rack from a salvage yard and having Dodge install it for $380 and then I'm selling it. This car is quickly falling apart. Air conditioning: Started hearing a hissing type sound from behind the dash. Soon after A/C did not blow cold air. Control module display also stopped working. Dodge said in order to fix the A/C they had to repair the module. Cost: About $600. I bough a module from a salvage yard and did it myself, saved $500. Then Dodge recharged the system only to have it leak out over the next several days. Brought it back to Dodge where they found a crack in the evaporator. Replacement cost: $500. Power window motor: Right front power window started failing intermittently, then stopped working altogether. Dealer said that the window sometimes gets stuck in the tight weatherstripping due to dirt and grime on the window and I simply need to coax it by my palm pressing down on it while actuating the button. What a bunch of @*$%! rear right window motor was replaced under warranty, this must be a common problem. Dealer wants $200+ to repair. What a racket! I've never had so many major repairs on a relatively new car in my life, and don't plan to ever again if Dodge knows what I mean!!

I purchased this vehicle in March of 2001. I have had nothing but trouble with it ever since. I have had electrical, air conditioning, and transmission problems which has resulted in approximately $2,600 in repairs in the year that I have owned it. I have contacted the crysler Corp. And they did not help me in anyway. The car orignally had a 36,000 mile 3 year warranty on it. Now the crysler Corp. Offers a 7 year 100,000 mile warranty on all their vehicles. This the first crysler product and the last one I will ever buy. I have previously owned GM products and currently own a 1997 Ford F-150 pickup and I am very satisfied with it. Is there any help you can give me? I have all receipts for all repairs since I have owned the vehicle.

A/cevaporator has gone out in my car. Additionally, the sensor on transmission went out 4 months ago. My mechanic says the exhaust system has rust spots. All people who have looked at the car say these problems shound not be happening on a car with only 48,000 miles.

Car was 4 months old - driving down I-70 and had a blowout. The tire split clean in to. Was told that I must of hit a pot hole. On 9/13/99 I had taken the car into the dealership and told them the tire was losing air. They said they couldn't find a problem, aired up the tire and I left. Little over a month later I had a blow out. I did not hit a pot hole. The tire was defective. I had to replace the tire with my own money. (tiresize: P205/70R15)

Hissing noise, increasing in intensity with engine speed, occurs everytime A/C clutch cycles. Dealer allegedly performed tsb for this issue, but problem continues to exist. A/C cycles on and off very rapidly, every 5-20 seconds, in all ambient humidity/temperature ranges.

The automatic temperature control is not working. It only blows fan air. I've had the car serviced by the dealership who determined that the problem was the A/C module on the dashboard so they replaced it. Afterwards, the A/C was working properly, but a month later after a long trip it stopped working again. I am baffled to what the problem is. I have gone to several websites which record car owner's complaints, and they have similar complaints with the same vehicle described above. I will post an announcement through these websites to direct their compaints to NHTSA. Thank you.
