CarComplaints.com Notes: The Dodge Intrepid, Stratus & other Chrysler sedans are infamous for oil sludge problems with the 2.7L V6 engine. If someone offers to sell you a 2.7L V6 model, it's only worth the price of the scrap metal it's going to shortly turn into.
NOTE: Only the 2.7L V6 has the oil sludge problem. Our "Avoid like the Plague" designation is ONLY for models with the 2.7L V6 engine. All other available engines are very reliable with no major problems.
Even with regular maintenance, the oil sludge defect eventually destroys the 2.7L engine typically around 80,000-100,000 miles. The only true fix we know about is to put in the larger 3.2L engine, which has a great reputation.
This issue was never deemed a safety defect by the Feds, so there was no recall. In the end, Chrysler got away with FOUR YEARS worth of defective 2.7L V6 engines in their sedans.

My 1999 Dodge Intrepid's 2.7 motor failed after hearing a loud ticking from the motor. It was later diagnosed as a timing chain failure from oil sludge buiidup. The motor was rebuilt at a cost of $3,000 Canadian. I have since had intermittent oil light flashing at idle roughly 20,000 km's after the rebuild without incident. Currently the car is still in operation and oil light doesn't come on. The car had 130,000km's at the time of the motor failure and currently has 184,000 km's on it. It was considered out of warranty and no help was offered through calls and letters to Chrysler customer service and the Canadian president odf daimler Chrysler at the time ed brust. I am a Chrysler employee and got this website from forums@autobytel.com, a 2.7 Chrysler motor complaint site. Thanks for any help, jim kainz.
I was exiting the highway on the way to my residence. As I was exiting the highway the engine began to knock loudly and in the matter seconds it seized and stopped running. Nearly causing a collision on the exit ramp. Fortunately myself, my girlfriend and newborn son were not injured.
While driving on the highway at a speed of 55-70 mph, the check engine light came on the 99 Dodge Intrepid. While getting off the highway contacts vehicle began to stall shutting off completely on the side of the road while hearing a clicking sound on the engine. Contact was able to restart vehicle and drove for a quarter of a mile before car shut of completely. At that point contact had vehicle towed into dealership. Jrb
- the contact stated that while driving at 20 mph, she applied the brakes on her 1999 Dodge Intrepid, the vehicle shuttered right then lost power. The contact was able to restart the vehicle, while driving the vehicle continued to shutter and smoke started coming out of the engine. The contact took the vehicle to jiffy lube and they stated that the engine had seized and needed to be replaced. The contact can provide copies of invoice repair. The failure mileage was 76000. The mechanic showed the consumer where anit-freeze had mixed with the oil. Updated 04/30/07.
- the contact explained that the check engine light of her 1999 Dodge Intrepid turned on in 2002, after owning the vehicle for about 3 weeks. The contact was not able to drive over 10 mph. The contact took the vehicle to northtown Dodge. The dealer replaced speed sensors on the vehicle, causing the engine light to turn off. Sometime during 2004 the engine light turned on again, and the vehicle was not able to be driven over 10 mph. The contact had a personal mechanic contact the dealer and verify the need to replace the speed sensor again. The speed sensors were replaced and the vehicle was operational. In November 2006 the check engine light turned on for a third time. The contact took the vehicle to her personal mechanic, who verified that it was a speed sensor issue and replaced it. On January 10, 2007 the check engine light turned on for a fourth time, but did not loose power. The contact continued to drive to a mechanic who found no problems. The oil light turned on, as well. No loss of power was experienced at this time like in previous failures. The contact explained that once the vehicle was moving the oil light turned off, but turns on when the vehicle is at a stop. The contact took the vehicle to transitown Dodge, but they asked for $100 to diagnose the vehicle.

Driving to have maintenance performed on my 1999 Dodge Intrepid. While driving down the highway, engine suddenly died. I had no braking or steering control once this happened. Had the vehicle towed and was told I would need another engine. I have researched the price and it ranges from 1700 (used) to 5499 (remanufactured and installed).
Dec 1, 2006 - mileage: Under 78K - problem: It was time for routine tune up on my car, once I popped the hood I went directly for the oil tank/engine first thing. PCV valve needed replacing, upon taking said valve off I noticed a lot of heavy gunk or "sludge" if you will. Put on brand new PCV valve kit bought from mopar and continued on with the rest of the tune-up. Thinking back to all the sludge I found on the old PCV valve I began to really wonder as this amount of sludge was not normal for a car that's kept up with exactly how the owners manual dictates. Upon research I found that "oil sludge" is the number one problem with the Dodge Intrepid 2.7L engine and possible signs and symptoms of said problem included: "heavy amounts of sludge found on PCV valves, slightly noticeable grey/blue smoke from exhaust and over all diminishing performance" all of which my car has/is showing signs of. From all that I've read and all "signs to look out for" I would have to say this engine is more then likely ready to blow if not this year then early next year. From the same amounts of complaints I've seen on this engine I really feel this should be Chrysler responsibility to recall this engine as it does pose a very serious, highly dangerous threat as the motor will stop at any given moment with no warning and no immediate noticeable cause. It's not fair once this faulty engine dies that the consumer gets slapped with the repair bill!
There were events or warning signs leading up to this event. My daughter and I were driving when all of the sudden my oil pressure light came on, followed by immediate engine shut-down. We almost wreck trying to get the car off the road and stopped. We were stranded in the cold, until my mom could get there to pick us up. After I had my car towed to the shop, and the mechanic diagnosed my problem I was in tears. The mechanic informed me that my engine was blown due to build up of sludge, and yet I change the oil every 3000 miles. He told me it would have to be replaced, and that it would cost anywhere from $4000-8000 to get it back on the road. I am a single mother with a very small income from a part time job, attend college full time, and am trying to raise my 4 year old daughter by myself. There is no way that I will be able to fix this car, nor do I want to so it can do it again so that the exact same thing can happened a few thousand miles later with junk motors. I can not afford to buy a new vehicle, so my daughter and I are on foot. This infuriates me, because the money greedy people at daimler Chrysler would not adhere to the repeated recommendations to recall these motors. It is unbelievable to me that they can act so recklessly and put the lives of many innocent people intentionally in harms ways by ignoring you, me, and the thousands like us. This is ridiculous and they should have to pay for our junk motors as well as some restitution for the serious financial and emotional hardships they have intentionally inflicted upon us. I will never ever buy another Dodge/Chrysler product nor will I allow anyone who will listen to me. I think that we should get everyone to boycott them, and plaster the links to these websites to as many people as possible. They deserve to be warned at the catastrophes that lie in their future. If we get a lawsuit please let me be one of the first to know. I wish everyone of my fellow victims the best of luck with this nightmare.
There were no events leading up to this failure..it happened suddenly and without notice. My 4yr old daughter and I were driving down the road, when all of the sudden my oil pressure light came on and the engine shut down. All functions of the car were lost, I almost got into a wreck while trying to get the car to the side of the road. I had it towed to a dealer, who in return told me that my motor was trash, and that it needed to be replaced. I changed the oil every 3000 miles every time and the previous owner, whom I knew very well, took excellent care of the car as well. The mechanic told me that the pistons blew due to build up of engine sludge, and that the motor was not worth fixing, and that I should buy a rebuilt or new motor. I began to research this data on the internet when I came across your website and many more like it. I quickly became infuriated with the Dodge company, as they are aware of their faulty engines, yet they continue to blame the consumer and refuse to recall these motors. My daughter and I could have been seriously injured had we been traveling much faster or been in a different location, such as train tracks near our house. This is completely absurd, Dodge is aware of the problem, yet refuse to back their products. I will never ever buy another Dodge or Chrysler product again, and I will not let any friends, family, or anyone else reading this do so either. If you know that you are producing junk motors, shouldn't you provide your consumers with the respect to warn them of the hazardous conditions that await them. If there are deaths because of this, can you really get an honest nights rest"?" I have lost all respect for Dodge that I once had. I now have a car sitting in my driveway that is worthless and cannot be driven because I can't invest 4-8K into the car for the new engine needed...why bother anyway when that motor would do the exact same thing in a matter of time..because it is absolute junk.
The engine failed after only 75000 miles.I had just had the the timing chain, oil pump replaced and the engine flushed for oil sludge in the engine a few months before.I have not had the engine replaced yet because it is too expensive to replace.
On August 15, 2005 my car seized its motor. A 99' Dodge Intrepid. I filed this information at that time. It has casued extreme fianacail disaster in my life since. I can't afford to pay for the car.
: the contact stated while driving 30 mph, the vehicle began sputtering, and a small amount of smoke emanated from under the hood. The contact stopped the vehicle, and examined the engine. Upon lifting the hood, another small amount of smoke was released. The contact attempted to restart the vehicle, but was unsuccessful. The vehicle was towed to a private repair shop, who determined that there was a crack in the engine block. The mechanic stated that the engine needed to be replaced.
I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid that blew a rod at 72,000 miles with no warning. We replaced the engine for about $3,000 and two weeks ago at 102,000 miles I started to hear a rapping sound that was probably another rod, but before the engine could blow another rod something in the timing snapped, so now I am left with a lawn ornament that I can't afford to fix and I am still paying for. Not to mention the various other items we have had to replace like the A/C condenser for $600 and the speed sensors, that was another $300. This car is the biggest lemon I have ever bought.
I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid, everytime I come to a stop light the engine shakes, the check engine lights stays on, the oil light flickers also when at stop light. 109,000 miles. I took my car to the shop and I was told that this is the early stages of the engine blowing. Cost $5000.
The engine light began to blink at the red light stops. I took it to the Chrysler dealership and told them the problem and they changed the oil. A month later the engine light came on and stayed on, so I took it back to the dealer. I was told that the engine was blown and since the car had 74,000 miles it was outside of the warranty and they would not replace it. The cost quoted to replace the engine was $ 7,000.
I was driving down interstate 35 in southern mn and the engine lost power than quit. The engine seized and it had to be towed home. Nothing has been done to correct the failure.
