CarComplaints.com Notes: The Dodge Intrepid, Stratus & other Chrysler sedans are infamous for oil sludge problems with the 2.7L V6 engine. If someone offers to sell you a 2.7L V6 model, it's only worth the price of the scrap metal it's going to shortly turn into.

NOTE: Only the 2.7L V6 has the oil sludge problem. Our "Avoid like the Plague" designation is ONLY for models with the 2.7L V6 engine. All other available engines are very reliable with no major problems.

Even with regular maintenance, the oil sludge defect eventually destroys the 2.7L engine typically around 80,000-100,000 miles. The only true fix we know about is to put in the larger 3.2L engine, which has a great reputation.

This issue was never deemed a safety defect by the Feds, so there was no recall. In the end, Chrysler got away with FOUR YEARS worth of defective 2.7L V6 engines in their sedans.

Had mild tapping sound from engine a few months ago, took vehicle to the mechanic and that is where I learned the reputation of the 2.7 liter engine. He advised that we should look for another vehicle before we became the latest victim. Unfortunately, on the way home from work one afternoon the engine started developing an even more pronounced clattering, knock and vibration; as if it were about to tear itself apart. Pulled over to avoid subjecting engine to even more damage. Had to have it towed home. Will not spend another dollar on this vehicle until Chrysler hands me a check from a lawsuit settlement.

There is an issue with the automatic front driver/passenger door locks, two of them have stopped operating-they can be locked and unlocked manually, but they do not unlock with the keyless entry. While driving down the road, the door locks lock makes a scary shrill noise that frightens passengers as well as the driver. Took vehicle to a dealer and they offered to replace the locks but it would be at the consumer's expense. Consumer did replace one of the door lock mechanisms, this was on the driver's door. No problems since the repair of that door lock. No explanation as to why the door lock has stopped operating. Consumer has not contacted Chrysler Corp on this issue at this time. Both front power windows have stopped operating as well, the power will raise window up and down but the window glass is off track. One of the two window brackets broke, causing the window to be off track-no repairs for this as well. The consumer was unable to close the window, someone would have to stand on the outside of the vehicle to physically hold the glass on the track.

Today the third power door lock when out on my 2000 Intrepid. Considering there are only four on the car I would think this is more then the norm. The first went out under warranty, the last two are on me. In addition to the locks, over the course of my ownership I have had to replace a power window motor, trunk lifts (that still don't work in cold weather), electrical system moduals, have the doors adjusted several times (they still don't fit right) and various misc. Items. This third out of four power locks is the clincher. My last three cars have been Dodge and this is my last Dodge. Has anyone else had problems with their locks?

Back lock on passenger side has gone bad. It makes a weird noise when the car automatically locks. It makes the same sound when you unlock the doors. That particular lock will not unlock, you can not pull it up sometimes and that is frightening.

Defective power door locks. Locks produce a loud screeching noise upon locking or unlocking. Doors then fail to unlock when the door handle is pulled. This can create a safety concern when driver and passengers attempt to egress vehicle in an emergency. This is a 3 time recurring problem which first happened while the vehicle was under warranty and has again occurred in January 2003

Interior electrical light system has failed completely. This effected dome light, /sunroof switch/ vanity mirror light, and dashboard. This problem has happened 5 times. Have been to dealership each time, and mechanic indicated that it was electrical mobile that was defective. Would have it replaced, but problem would always reappear.
