This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Continuous at speeds of 40 to 60 mph, auto trans shifts between gears high/low, had transmission replaced that they said was the problem ie: $2,400, did not fix it, still have the same problem. Its well known in the transmission and dealer shops that its a electrical interference from the pumps or alternator that interrupts the shifting signal to the computer, yet they charge us to fix a design problem !
Traveling at freeway speed vehicle engine began to surge 200 to 500 RPM. Took to chrys garage and found "intermit volt spikes in a.P.P. sensor" sensor replaced. 10/20/03. On 9/13/05 same thing happened and the a.P.P. sensor was again replaced. Vehicle ran fine after a.P.P. sensor replaced.
1999 Dodge Ram 3500. Front end steering failure death wobble, $550 repair, ac evaporator, $800 repair, presently engine control module $300 for troubleshooting by the dealer, $730 for part and additional dollars for labor. Estimate of $1000+. asked Dodge for assistance, truck is 6 months out of warranty and only has 68830 miles on it. The engine (cummins diesel) was warranted for 5 years, 100K, and the same with emmissions control 5/100. The ECM could have been replaced by Dodge under either of these warranties.
My vehicle failed by shifting erratically while pulling out onto the freeway in houston, tx during heavy traffic and if not handled in a quick responsive manner, there could have been a serious accident causing injuries or deaths to many people. This is a serious problem that needs to be adressed prompt and straight forward. Naturally the warrant had just gone out on the vehicle and after researching this problem myself, this is a problem of widespread proportion and a poor design on the part of Dodge motor company knowing these vehicles were mass produced with this problem and not caring.
Transmission was leaking oil consumer called dealer and explained the problem, and was told that warranty was 1000 miles over, they would have to charge him for it. It seemed that transmission mount was worn out.
Truck will not downshift without pushing accelerator about half way to the floor. Pushing the accelerator that far down could cause an accident. Manufacturer said there was no remedy for this problem.
The failure of these items occured on interstate highways at maximum legal speed and had I not been a skilled professional driver 8 to 10 people could have been killed. There are hundreds of other drivers with this problem many of us have been kept quiet by having our trucks repossesed and sued out of business. Some of the other drivers were not as lucky as I and had nasty accidents. No safety defec tlisted.
I had stopped at a boat ramp to launch boat. I tied end of rope to bumber of truck and the other end to the boat. I then was going to back down to water until boat floated off trailer and then pull ahead, stop and get rope and tie boat to dock. The rope snagged on the bumber of truck so I pulled up, stopped, got out of truck and walked to back of truck. I got rope off of bumber and was coiling it on the front of the boat when the truck jumped into reverse and almost injured me twice. Once when it almost backed over me and once when I tried to get into it to put into gear, but was too late and truck entered water and sunk. Everyone says that I left gear in reverse, but how did I get out and walk to the back of the truck before it started to move?? I think transmission was defective and dangerous.
I leased this vehicle new, and for the last three years, every 10,000 miles approximately, I have had to take it into the dealer to have the tracker bar replaced, tie rod ends have also been replaced. The front end still shimmies terrible, and it is difficult to control at times. I also have had transmission trouble, and engine skipping constantly. I am very upset with the way I am treated at the dealer also. They were very nice to me when they wanted to sell the vehicle but every time I bring it in to them and ask why they can't fix it, they get huffy and try to put the blame on me. Now I could see if the vehicle were old, but it has had problems since I got it! I waited along time to be able to afford a Dodge pickup, and I am very disappointed, I should have gotten a Chevy. I tried to talk to the dealership about lemon lawing it but they won't talk to me.
When driving consumer noticed transmission light was illuminated on dashboard. Vehicle was turned off. After restarting vehicle consumer noticed transmission light went off. After driving a little ways transmission made a very loud noise. Consumer contacted dealer, which determined that torque converter failed, and transmission overheated, melting various parts within transmission.transmission have been replaced at 12, 000 miles/40, 000 miles, and now at 46, 000 miles.

There have been multiple reporst of transmission failure on this and several other year vehicles to Chrysler over the last few years. I was lucky and in my case the transmission wnet out while in reverse in a parking area and I was able to recruit help to push it out of traffic.
