At this time there has not been an incident, however Ford is not taking the ABS module problem seriously. My 2002 Ford Windstar SE currently has the ABS and brake warning lights come on at random times. These lights stay on for a period of time and then when van is restarted sometimes they are still on and sometimes they are not. I do not have the money to fix Ford's flaw.

The contact owns a 2002 Ford Windstar. Since September of 2006, the ABS light constantly illuminates. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer twice and they replaced the ABS module under warranty; however, this did not correct the failure. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was out of warranty and they would not assist. The dealer stated that the estimated cost for repair was $1,200. The failure mileage was 70,000 and current mileage was 180,000.

The contact owns a 2002 Ford Windstar. While driving 55 mph, the ABS light illuminated and smoke appeared underneath the vehicle. The contact assumed that the electrical unit was at fault. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but would have to be repaired at the contact's expense. The failure has occurred approximately five times. The contact has decided not to repair the vehicle at this time. The dealer stated that the ABS control module needs to be repaired. The failure and current mileages were 35,000.

Experiencing intermittent ABS and brake warning light. Ford dealer pulled computer code and got C1185 and numerous other codes. The diagnoses was that the problem was most likely the ABS control module. They would not guarantee that replacement would fix problem so for the $700 they wanted decided to investigate problem myself. Glad I did. It seems as if this is a very common problem on the 2002 Ford Windstar and has the potential to be a fire hazard. I am actually very surprised that Ford would not issue a recall or at least offer their customers a subsidized price to replace this defective ABS module ($700 seems very high for a small electrical component) not only because of the fire hazard issue but because this has to do with the brake system which is certainly a safety issue.

All the light on ABS, brake are all lit up and I was told it was the ABS module in the 2002 Windstar and they are prone to break down and the breaking is off on the van when the lights are on.

The contact owns a 2002 Ford Windstar. While driving between 45-55 mph, the engine began to lose power. The contact pulled into a Ford dealer and was informed that the brake cruise deactivation switch was leaking into the fuse box. The failure caused the speedometer to fail and the ABS and several other lights to illuminate. Recall number 05528 (deactivation switch) was referenced regarding the Ford Explorer. The current and failure mileages were 70,000. Update 09/10/08 updated 09/15/08.

Email concerning safety issues with the 2001-2003 Ford Windstar, a leaky brake differential deactivation switch which causes brake fluid to leak down wires and the anti-lock brake computer fails during hot weather conditions. The consumer stated the issue is a large aluminum plate attached to the bottom of the anti-lock computer circuit board. When the plate gets hot, the aluminum expands whereby stretching the computer board and causing the anti-lock brakes to fail. The consumer stated he had a fire in his vehicle, as a result of a leaky brake pressure differential deactivation switch.

Warning lights for ABS, emergency brake, trac off (traction control). Error display od traction control system" several error in diagnostics all pointing to the ABS system the traction control when this occurs is disabled. The lights light up after the car warms up if cold from 2-10 minutes, if used recently the lights turn on almost immediately. ABS and brake light come on intermittently. Have had this problem for 2+ years. No one can tell me why. As of late, the lights have been on nearly constantly. Suspect ABS control module.

We have a 2002 Windstar van. While it was parked in our garage overnight, the ABS motor spontaneously caught fire. The vehicle was off and parked. With the location of the motor so close to the fuel line, we were surprised that the fuel system did not ignite.
