1998 GMC Jimmy, windshield wipers stop working in the rain. Extremely dangerous. This situation has happened before, they stop working then sometimes they start up again. It is so bad I don't trust the vehicle to drive it in the rain. It is terrifying to lose them in parkway/turnpike driving of 65 mph. This defect will cause accidents. Why was the recall stopped in 1997 & the problem never corrected?

On my way to work, my windshield wiper keeps failing. It's almost 100% guaranteed to fail during any rain. It also fails when using the windshield washer. This is very dangerous, as I do only highway driving every day. I know that previous years had the recall, yet the 1998 has not been recalled for fix. I realized this was a problem during the first rain after I purchased my vechicle 2 1/2 years ago. I hope GM is willing to fix this problem soon. I am sincerly considering converting to another maker.

Windshield wipers quit working while engaged. In some cases windshield wiper will restart within seconds. When this failure occurred it reduced the driver's visibility. Dealership indicated that the failure was caused by a defective windshield wiper switch.

The windshield wipers sporatically will not operate. If it should rain, the wiper may or may not operate. A recall on this problem has been issued for vehicles up to 1997. However, I have a 1998 with an identical problem.

My son was driving his 1998 GMC Jimmy. VIN [xxx] in a heavy rain when suddenly the wipers came to a complete stop while driving on the highway at 55 mph causing a near zero visibility condition. I've checked NHTSA for complaints and find many reports for this situation. My mechanic called a GM dealer and was told there was a recall to replace a defective circuit board. I contacted a GM dealership and was told the recall extended only out to 1997 vehicles. My complaint is similar to one submitted to this forum under ODI id number 10016222. This is most definitely a safety hazard that GM should be forced to address and remedy without limitation and reimburse those who have corrected the problem with out of pocket expenses. Information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

1992 Chevrolet C1500 pickup and 1998 GMC Jimmy. Windshield wipers work intermittently. Cause appear to be a faulty connector at wiper motor housing. Unable to adequately seat the connector. When inoperative, a "buzzing" sound continues to be heard as if electrical power is continuing to be applied to the motor. The sound continues even after the wiper selector switch is turned off. Consider this a driving hazard and possible electrical hazard.

My windshield wipers just stop in the middle of the windshield and start back when they feel like it. I was on my way to work at 3:00 am. In a bad rain storm this morning, and not for the first time my wipers just stopped. I almost wrecked and had to pull over to the left side of a four lane highway because I couldn't see until they just started up again. I was very late for work. I never know when they are going to stop. My sister has the same model, make and year car. Her wipers had been stopping on her for two years off and on. Hers finally just quit completely. Even after all the times of taking it in to be fixed. One of my work associates has the same trouble with his GMC van.
