Chief complaint: rear brakes are overheating and wearing excessively...approximately 3x faster than front! This is the second time the pads have needed to be replaced and they have less than 25,000 miles on them this time. Dealer claims it may be the after market tires/ wheels I have installed and that the rear brakes (traction control) is grabbing rotors harder during highway cornering that I drive every day....but I think otherwise.
The problem is intermittent and inconsistent though the driving conditions remain the same. If it were as the dealer says, then all four brakes would overheat fairly evenly as they would all apply pressure due the the "faster" rotating speed. While both rear sets of brake pads seem to be wearing faster than the front, the driver's side rear gets scorching hot while the other three are barely warm. It will even overheat or get too hot to touch with a relatively short trip (under 10 miles) on a straight road with little need for braking.
My initial thought was the brake caliper in question was somehow binding but it was checked and deemed to be functioning properly as was the parking brake. My current thought is it is computer/ control module for the traction control system malfunctioning for that one wheel. Like I mentioned earlier: the amount the brake/ rotor overheats varies from day to day even though the route and conditions are the same and when it does overheat it is ALWAYS the drivers side that gets scorching hot!
Not sure what the solution would be - is there an individual control module that can be replaced or is it the whole computer braking system? I find it hard to believe and very disappointing that Honda is incapable or worse, unwilling to find a solution for this problem.
