We bought a pre-owned 2010 Accord Crosstour in 2011. In 2013 we started having engine troubles. The dealer noticed 3 oil burned spark plugs recommended replacing and fuel injection cleaning additive. Their cost was too much and we had it fixed elsewhere. During subsequent oil changes the oil level was unusually low and the car was burning oil. We had to have the sparks-plugs changed again (FREE this time by Honda) and was told they would have to monitor the oil (I later researched and found out about the class action suit for this issue).

Fast-forward to Dec 2014. The car had a significant oil leak and Honda finally decides to replace the small block. 8 months later, check engine light is on & the Honda dealer says the car has a bad catalytic converter. The dealer asks, knowing the car was pre-owned, did we get the Car-Fax? They suggest it may have had water damage which can ruin the catalytic converter. We bought this car from another Honda dealer in the area, I'm sure they do not want to be known for selling a water damaged cars, so I doubt it. I, my mechanic, and a Google search have a better reason for the bad catalytic converter: Smoky "oil-burning" exhaust, caused by a at least a couple of years of oil burned by the engine Honda admitted was faulty. The same engine Honda replaced because of oil burning issues. This a common cause of catalytic converter damage.

This is likely the cause of our bad catalytic converter and Honda knows it. Honda refuses to admit it because they don't want to replace it for free. Their price quote for replacing the catalytic converter $1200.
