Son in Syracuse, NY. Car won't start. Brought it to dealership on February 13, 2021. Today is 5 days later, February 18, 2021. National Hyundai site for service personnel to download car specific info is down, no immediate fix or clue to to problem with car. As a result individual dealerships have to turn down business and my car can't be diagnosed and is simply on the lot. Simply not acceptable from Hyundai manufacturer. No loaner car, no offer to help my young son out at this point. I'm a repeat Hyundai customer with multiple cars.

Sonata Hybrid Limited 2.0L 4 cyl Hybrid

  • Automatic transmission
  • 31,000 miles

Twice in the last 30 days while driving our 2016 Sonata Hybrid Limited and after stopping to get gas on a long trip, the car would not restart. A triangle appeared on the dash that said, "Check Hybrid System" and below it was a yellow triangle with an "HEV" and exclamation point (!) in it. We called the dealer and they offered no suggestion for what the problem might be, but only asked us to have it towed. This did not work well for us because we were 3 hours into a 4 hour trip to attend a wedding. This was the second occurrence while out of town and the first time the car eventually started, but only after 15 minutes. This time we waited again and it took closer to a half hour before it started. We continued driving, but the engine light stayed on for a long time. The next day we notice the engine light was not off. We're in the early stages of this problem and hope others will let us know what they did to get the problem fixed.

Sonata Hybrid SE 4 cyls 1 2.0L Di Hev

  • Automatic transmission
  • 50,000 miles

Less than a year after I bought Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2016, I suddenly could not start my car; there was a Check Hybrid HEV warning sign on dashboard. I had to wait for for 30-60 minutes before I could start it again. This problem was initially intermittent. I brought / towed the car several times to a Hyundai dealer/service in Irvine, but was always turned down as a non-issue.

After suffering this issue so many times, now I see a pattern on how to replicate this issue. Check: https://checkhev.tumblr.com/ where I started blogging every repeat incident. I need to first drive the car for an hour (perhaps on highways) and stop the engine (e.g. during refueling), after which, I will not be able restart the car with the Check HEV warning sign popping up. I typically have to wait 30 minutes before trying again. Imagine the hours and money, cancelled meetings, emotional pain that I have been through.

Even after all this, when I brought the car to same Hyundai dealer/service, they washed their hands saying they saw no problem and had no resource to test and fix this. So it became my problem. Honestly I regret purchasing this $25k+ car given so much pain I had endured. I raised the issue with Hyundai Motors America's Customer Relation and am currently waiting for response.

Update from Aug 4, 2019: Hyundai Motors was able to send an engineer to the dealership to fix this problem.
