I bought my car used from someone who told me they had recently replaced the A/C compressor, so I had assumed it was good to go for many years, and they had the documentation to prove it. In May of 2018, specifically on my birthday, my compressor went out just as summer was starting. I never used max A/C, and made it a point to always mildly suffer because I wanted it to last.
