I have owned a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo for 7 years and it has been a good car for me. A year ago my front seat broke off of the support beam and it is made of metal. I only way 180 lbs and have taken pretty good care of the car. After researching this online I have come to find out that this has happened to a lot of Jeep and they used cheap metal to save money. I will be the first to say I love Jeep but this is dangerous for anybody riding in one. I only hope they do not use this method in newer models. It is very dangerous riding around in a seat that is not hooked to the car correctly. I had a friend weld the seat back to the support but it was only a temporary fix as it has broken again.
The frame holding the driver's seat is very flimsy and has broken in 3 of 4 places holding the seat. The 4th location has not yet broken all the way through but a crack has begun. The vehicle is not safely drivable and is parked until I can find replacement parts. Many people have reported this same problem. Why has nothing been done? the problem starts as a squeak, then a crack, then the seat is tilted and ultimately the breaks happen at all 4 corners of the seat frame. A crack at all 4 corners will allow the seat, and the driver, to fall back too far to reach the steering wheel and brakes. This is very dangerous.
My drivers side front seat on my Jeep Grand Cherokee broke, we had it welded back twice, but the entire track and the back of the seat are broken. It's very unsafe to drive and apparently this is very common on these Jeep. I don't understand how Jeep can make a vehicle with such an unsafe part. It really should be recalled. I know of a poll for this particular defect and 1703 people have signed that the same thing has happened to them.

Approximately 5 years ago, the heat stopped working on the passenger side of my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Then last year, the heat and A/C stopped working completely. This makes for very dangerous driving conditions as visibility is greatly reduced at times. Its too costly for me to repair myself. It appears that this is a problem for most of these vehicles and I can't understand why something hasn't been done about it. Also, the passenger side seat heating element stopped working after it apparently shorted out, luckily, no fire occurred. And the hydraulics through out the vehicle have stopped working and I noticed this when first the hood came down on my head and then the rear window! I've also had to replace the engine and it was due to problems with the coolant/hydraulic fan...at a price tag of $4000...
2001 jgc driver seat is broken. When I took my Jeep in to have rear axle worked on it came back with the driver seat rocking back to the right and forward to the left. The mechanic says he didn't do it but that they eventually wear out like that. I don't recall my seat rocking back and forth before I brought it to him. After checking with other Jeep owners I have been told they have the same problem with the driver seat. It makes driving uncomfortable and I'm now noticing problems with my lower back and hip.
2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo driver seat is broken. Squeaked a little at fist, then just broke into pieces. The seat is not even attached to the base anymore. Very dangerous. No one has the part. Dealership says that seat comes in individual parts totaling $2300 + $99 labor. Ridiculous! two of the needed parts are discontinued. Ridiculous!!
Driver seat has broken, causing me to sway side to side when turning. This seems to be a very common issue with this model of Jeep, and could definitely lead to a major wreck. I just bought the car used. Wish I'd have noticed this problem during the test drive.
Driver's seat has broken off the floor mount in left front corner - the metal snapped. The seat rocks and is dangerous. I see that there are literally hundreds of complaints about this problem - will Jeep fix this?
I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited, VIN: [xxx]. the driver side seat brackets (left front and right rear) have broken. I have been told by Jeep that this is a common problem and it will cost $900 to repair. I had this repair done once at 50K miles and it has happened again. Information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee and the drivers seat completely broke away from the frame. It seems to me that this should have never happened. I think the seat is made very poorly and is very unsafe.
I own a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, and the driver's seat mount has broken, allowing the seat to be connected to the floorboard by only 2 corners. The events leading up to the failure include a noise coming from the seat while seated in it, especially with weight shifts during turns. The seat is now not supported on the front left corner nor the back right corner. To attempt to correct the failure, I had a friend try to glue a plate on the front left corner to help stabilize it against the floorboard mount, but the same was not done to the back right corner due to the placement of it. I have done research online into the cost to fix this issue, and it seems it will cost $600-$1000 to replace the seat and it's mount. The seat now tilts into the middle, and the pressure of the seat on the seat belt receiver has now destroyed the center console also. It is also apparent that thousands of other Jeep Grand Cherokee owners have had the same issue. This is not a "normal" repair that a consumer should have to face. Jeep/Chrysler refused to do anything.
I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and while driving on the highway the drivers seat just snapped causing me to fall in the rear seat.. I lost control and drove off the right side of the road into the woods thankfully not hitting anything nor doing anymore damage to my vehicle. But contacted my local dealer who stated he had heard there was a problem with the seats but there was no recall nor anything he could do to help my with the situation. I had the seat welded back together but now it is starting to break on the other side and I am afraid if it gives will I be as lucky as last time.. why is there no recall if so many people are having the same problem?
The seat brackets on my driver's seat of my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo snapped off while I was driving which caused me to fall into my back seat and made me veer into oncoming traffic. I was able to get control and avoid an accident. Contacted Chrysler and they shut me down on repairing it. This is definitely a safety hazard - why isn't there a recall?
While making a turn, there was a pop under the seat. The bracket holding the seat has broken near the mounting bolts making the seat rock while sitting in it. I am afraid that if in an accident the seat might come completely loose.
The contact owns a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the front driver seat was broken. The nuts and bolts became disconnected from the frame causing the contact to fall into the rear seat while driving at 35 mph. The contact called the dealership and the dealer stated that the seat was no longer in stock. The contact had not spoken with the manufacturer at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.
