This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Transmission has to be replaced. Research that this vehicle had many reports of being problem prone pointed to this website for investigating these reports. The cost of repairing is over $2500 and other Mazda were at that dealership the same day for the same problem.
Transmission locked up while driving at 45 mph, vehicle came to a dead stop with engine running. Front wheels locked up, and would not move due to torque converter failure. Engine would stall during right turns, dealer reset computer, then engine light illuminated, dealer stated the torque converter clutch was slipping, transmission locked up on the way to a dealership for replacement of torque converter clutch, a new transmission was installed and 20 miles later the od off light illuminated, vehicle started smoking and losing power, this time dealer stated the cooling system in the radiator was not large enough to cool the transmission, an external cooling system was installed, now transmission needs replaced again, consumer requests that vehicle be replaced or repurchased by the dealer.
After three trips to aforementioned dealer with the same complaint, dealer repeatedly says that they can find nothing wrong with the transmission. Help!
After driving about 50 miles at 70-75mph, the transmission would sometimes downshift for no apparent reason. Sometimes the O/D light came on, and upon pulling off to stop, the car would not engage 1st gear until the car cooled down (the O/D light reset to off whenever the car was shut off and restarted. Towards the end of an 900 mile trip to port charlotte, fl, the transmission started slipping on top of the other problems and would not maintain a constant speed (the RPM's varied severely during this time). Had to eventually pull off, call a tow truck and have the transmission rebuilt. After about 3 and 1/2 weeks I got the car back and upon driving it home the O/D light came on twice during the 93 mile trip home and the same problem occured with the car not wanting to start in first gear again. I talked to the aadco transmission repair facility in tifton, ga again and they imformed me that the problem was probably electrical!!!!, I.e. the computer. After disconnecting the battery to reset the computer, it seemed to drive better, but still jerky or slipping at times. I haven't driven it at highway speeds yet, I'll be going about 190 miles this weekend, I hope. 1. what should I do next" 2. is the computer the most likely failed component and is it expensive to repair? 3. is Mazda recalling any of these vehicles due to these type of problems? 4. are there any other actions that I may take to recover any past or future expenses"
I am the second owner of this car and I don't understand how can a 2year old car need a transmision. I only had this car 1year I just don't understand if there any thing you can do to help me please contact me. I was trying to see if there was a recall on transmision for this year. Thanks for your help.
When slowing down and beginning to re-accelerate the transmission jumps in to gear. The interior headliner of the car burned in extreme heat. Upon taking the car to a local upholstery shop I was informed that this was not uncommon in the 1998 model car that I have.
After only one year of owning this car and a day after having a full maintenance job done it's strange to find out that your transmission is damaged and the total costs is $2470.
After starting engine and stepping on brake to shift gear, the shift gear remains locked. Does not move. Must play (sometimes hard) to get from park to reverse and then move. Dealer cannot duplicate.
The transmission system malfunctioned, causing engine stalling/surging and accleration which resulted in an accident. Cause unknown. Dealer cannot determine problem.
626 taken to Mazda to have transmission checked for rough shifting and clunking noise. Mazda said the transmission was defective and needed to be replaced. Once replaced, new transmission acted in the same manner. Mazda then decided to replace all 4 motor mounts. That did not correct the problem either. The service department then told me that rough shifting and clunking sounds are normal for the 98'626. I found that explaination very hard to believe to say the least, so I am meeting with the regional sales rep for Mazda in an effort to have the problem rectified.
