rim peeling

First of all, the car has 108,000 miles on it and my wife still LOVES it. We bought the car used w/ 24,000 mi on it (19" rims, Grand Touring pearl white, mint condition). Soon after my wife noticed some peeling. She asked her detailer about it and he thought the first owner had put something on them that made them peel. It has progressed since then to the point you see in the picture. About a year ago, she asked the Mazda dealer she takes the vehicle to for servicing and he suggested getting them refinished. There was no mention that it was a common problem on the 19" wheels. We are about to pull the trigger on getting them replaced, $1500-2000 installed, depending on the rim.

Update from May 12, 2022: After seeing the previous complaints about rims peeling, my wife went back to the dealer and asked them to help out with the costs of the new rims because they knew that it was a common problem. Well, the dealer and Mazda came back and said that if she paid $250 bucks, they would take all 4 rims and get them refinished. My wife really wanted to keep a Mazda emblem on her rims so she jumped at their offer. She had it done 2 weeks ago, they had the car all week but gave her a loaner to use. They look beautiful, hopefully they won't start peeling.

This is the second set of wheels for this car. About 1 1/2 years after I purchased it new I noticed the wheels were turning black. After going back and forth with the dealership employees, who told me I must've washed the wheels with acid, I finally spoke to the service manager and he agreed it was a quality issue. He ordered new wheels and installed them no charge. Now about 6-8 months later I notice the new wheels are peeling. I haven't attempted to contact the dealer yet, but plan to this coming week. Three of the four wheels have significant areas where the top coat has peeled off and they look horrible.

Hello everyone,

Just to share my experience. I had a brand new 2015 mazda 6 with 19" wheels. One year after , the rim paint start to peed at the arms area (no contact possible with the outside). at tha Mazda garage, they told me that this is known as a quality issu. I asked the warranty to intereveine and they refuse to take part of the repair or the replacement.

Just want to know if someone else had the same bad experience on the 19" wheels. If yes, please tell me how I can recover my rims. It is a shame a very nice car has a such premature issue on the wheels.

Thank you all.

For any new buyers, my advise for you is to avoid to buy the mazda 6 with the 19" rims.
