Transmission Shifting Hard

CarComplaints.com Seal Of Avoid Like The Plague

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Pontiac G6 has major problems with two areas fairly critical to the act of driving... steering & safety.

The 2005 G6 has a major defect trend with electronic power-assisted steering failure. The power steering cuts out while driving, making it extremely difficult to steer. G6 owners typically report spending $600 - $1,200+ to fix the problem, replacing either the entire steering column or the power assist motor.

In March 2010, GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles for this exact problem "...after receiving 1,100 complaints of power steering failures." However the 2005 G6 wasn't included in that recall.

In July 2010, GM issued a "Special Coverage Adjustment" — TSB #10183 — covering "certain" (not all) 2005, 2006 & 2008 Pontiac G6's for power steering problems, up to 10 years/100k miles.

As of early 2013 the NHTSA had 300+ steering complaints on file for the 2005 G6, with 12 crashes & 4 injuries. The NHTSA closed their initial investigation in 2007, having determined that losing your power steering going over 15-20 mph isn't a big deal & that most crashes occurred at slow speeds, so not a safety risk. Ridiculous? Yep, we think so too.

The 2005 G6 also has an expensive problem with "popping" or "clunking" noises when turning, & that issue extends to newer model years as well.

Factor in the 2005 Pontiac G6's poor side impact protection & you end up with a vehicle you should steer clear of.

2005 Pontiac G6 Gt..... 2007 had transmission problems, had a new transmission put in, paid out off pocket, it was just out of warranty. Dec 2014 started having transmission issues again ( shifts hard/ jerks putting it in gear and when shifting gears while driving , engine light on).

So called headquarters, they referred me to GMC Buick dealer to have the recall on shift cable replaced (did that), problem still not fixed. So dealer told me needed to replace front and rear mounts @ cost of $316 (did that), called me that car was ready and had been road tested and it was fixed. I went to pick up car got just turned out of parking lot, doing same things, so I turned around and went back told them problem wasn't fixed, the guy said are you serious? I said, right there is the car, let's go for test drive. So we went for a drive, he said I can't believe this, bring the car back tomorrow and let us run a test on it, so I did that. He called, told me it needed solenoid and pressure control cost @ $474. I ask are you for sure this will fix it this time, he said I am sure, so had them to do that. Called, car ready, same thing, he had drove it and tested it, everything was fine.

Went, picked the car up, it's still the same, not fixed. So went straight back to dealer, told him it's not fixed, he said once again can't believe it's still doing it . So he said take car home drive it to see if it would reset itself and he would call me first thing Monday. Well, no call Monday, waited until around 1, called him... He said we can't figure it out, it's weird, sometimes it doesn't do it, they couldn't figure it out .

So here I was, without a car on and off for a month, car not fixed, and just lied to. So at this point very upset, so called headquarters, explain things to the lady, says what do you want me to do, you need to take it to a dealer (really). I just can't believe you can't get any help nor service after buying a New GM car. It wasn't a used car. But there's one thing our family has decided after all the issues, problems with GM and nothing has ever been resolved in any of our issues, that none of us will buy another GM car. Because somewhere there has to be a defect and they don't want to help. I mean an 2005 and all these problems with transmission. The code comes up p0742 for the issue.
