CarComplaints.com Seal Of Avoid Like The Plague

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Pontiac G6 has major problems with two areas fairly critical to the act of driving... steering & safety.

The 2005 G6 has a major defect trend with electronic power-assisted steering failure. The power steering cuts out while driving, making it extremely difficult to steer. G6 owners typically report spending $600 - $1,200+ to fix the problem, replacing either the entire steering column or the power assist motor.

In March 2010, GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles for this exact problem "...after receiving 1,100 complaints of power steering failures." However the 2005 G6 wasn't included in that recall.

In July 2010, GM issued a "Special Coverage Adjustment" — TSB #10183 — covering "certain" (not all) 2005, 2006 & 2008 Pontiac G6's for power steering problems, up to 10 years/100k miles.

As of early 2013 the NHTSA had 300+ steering complaints on file for the 2005 G6, with 12 crashes & 4 injuries. The NHTSA closed their initial investigation in 2007, having determined that losing your power steering going over 15-20 mph isn't a big deal & that most crashes occurred at slow speeds, so not a safety risk. Ridiculous? Yep, we think so too.

The 2005 G6 also has an expensive problem with "popping" or "clunking" noises when turning, & that issue extends to newer model years as well.

Factor in the 2005 Pontiac G6's poor side impact protection & you end up with a vehicle you should steer clear of.

Here we are again, year 2, had my tires changed for new winter tires. Front end started to vibrate immidiatly after leaving dealership. Went back to have it checked (never know, might have forgotten to bolt something back). Dealer says it's the tires, removes them to check balance. Everything is OK. Puts them back on the car, go for a test drive, vibrates less but it's still there. Finally agrees to turn the disk again. This time they remove the disks and has them turned off the car. Puts them back on. Less vibration, but you can still feel it in the steering.

Car started to vibrate after changing my all season tires for winter tire. Figured that it was the new tread at first. Than I noticed that the problem was getting worse. Started to get worried when the vibration started to happen when I was breaking.

Went to dealer, says that its normal on this model (yeah right) took the technician for a ride. Came back saying it was not normal. They machined the brake disc in place. Vibration stopped. Work performed under warranty, took an afternoon.

Well, tire changing time again, vibration is back, finally figured what was going on, it seems that all my troubles come from the fact that the dealer mechanic was not using his torque bars when installing the wheels back, the disk, being a bit on the weak side, warped itself and that was creating the vibration.

We are now over the warranty, it ended at 60,000KM. So the dealer says that we need to change the disk and pad $6-700.00. Told him to forget it. Went to an independent brake specialist, that is when I learned about the little problem. Says that whenever they machined the disk they just created extra wear and weakened it even more. Got new disk and pad installed (not from the manufacturer) All I can say is WOW!!!. No more vibration, not even a little. Totally different car to drive. Is it because I was not fed B**S. Don't know but I've been driving for 2 months and even had my tires changed and there is still no vibration.

I recently purchased a used 2005 Pontiac g6 with 53,000, quite a bit of miles. I noticed that when i was going on the freeway when i hit about 80 mph or so the car just had this bad vibration! i was scared that something was wrong. I took it to the dealership where i bought it Power Toyota in Tempe. The mechanic told me that all cars make this vibration its normal, the tires were new the only thing he suggested is just to let it be, it would cost me more money to get better quality tires when the ones i had were already new. Then just recently i noticed that when i brake sometimes the car will shake violently as well. This is gone way out of line now i'm taking it to a certified pontiac dealership to get checked. The vibrating is severe.

I bought this car in may and it is now december and it has been in the shop 6 times with numerous problems. The wheels and tires vibrate like you are on a wash board. The dealer says that it is not there that they can not make the car do it and that most G6 have that vibration yeah right.

There is a vibration at various speeds. Dealership can not correct. They say it meets Spec. after 5 trips to the shop -- indicated bad tires. Had a mechanic to drive, balance and drive again. Still there. Dealership took me in another G6 -- vibrations there -- He tried to indicate that is how it is. I asked "So all G6's have a problem" - He said "no not all. Lets talk to a salesman about a trade." My car has been the shop at least 1 month out of the time I had it. First report was less than a month after purchase.
