CarComplaints.com Seal Of Avoid Like The Plague

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Pontiac G6 has major problems with two areas fairly critical to the act of driving... steering & safety.

The 2006 G6 has a major defect trend with electronic power-assisted steering failure. The power steering cuts out while driving, making it extremely difficult to steer. G6 owners typically report spending $600 - $1,200+ to fix the problem, replacing either the entire steering column or the power assist motor.

In March 2010, GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles for this exact problem "...after receiving 1,100 complaints of power steering failures." However the 2006 G6 wasn't included in that recall.

In July 2010, GM issued a "Special Coverage Adjustment" — TSB #10183 — covering "certain" (not all) 2005, 2006 & 2008 Pontiac G6's for this power steering issue, up to 10 years/100k miles. However a large number of 2006 G6 owners have reported they were not covered by this campaign, based on VIN#.

As of late 2013 the NHTSA had well over 700 steering complaints on file for the 2006 G6, with 21 crashes & 12 injuries. The NHTSA closed their initial investigation in 2007, having determined that losing your power steering going over 15-20 mph isn't a big deal & that most crashes occurred at slow speeds, so not a safety risk. Ridiculous? Yep, we think so too.

The 2006 G6 also has an expensive problem with "popping" or "clunking" noises when turning, & that issue extends to newer model years as well.

Factor in the 2006 Pontiac G6's poor side impact protection & you end up with a vehicle you should steer clear of.

The vanity mirror is made with cheap plastic. The hinges on both of the mirrors have broken which means everytime I have my sunvisor down the stupid thing flaps at your face as you are driving down the road.

This actually was also a safety issue, because when driving with sun in your eyes and you can not pull down the sunvisor because the sunshade falls and blocks vision.

Same problem with the clip on the visor. Took it to be replace and now have 2 different visors and I am not happy with the GM dealer for not telling me they were not the same. Would prefer a junkyard visor to mismatched visors.

I experienced this about 8 months after I purchased my car. I inquired about it at the dealership when I took car in for oil change. I was told I had to replace the whole sun visor and they would have to order the part. It was very annoying at times. I finally just took the flap off. Eventually, the one on the passenger side fell off. I still have a mirror on both sides just no flap over mirror. I wonder if it is certain color of G6 or all colors. My car is Silver.

I have had to have both sun visors replaced (on separate times) because the vanity mirror flap hinge goes out and wont stay open! Now the passenger flap has broke AGAIN! So I give up, obviously this is just a cheap part that I need to just accept...

Pulled down visor and mirror cover fell open with broken hinge. It had just snapped without being touched. It took two weeks to get the part and over two hours to replace the visor. What a waste of time!

Every time I say not hardly worth mentioning I see where someone else has this same problem. I don't know if the vanity mirrors were not installed well or what, but they replaced it so I am happy, plus I had it done while I was getting my maintenance.
