2006 Pontiac G6 (Page 1 of 6)

CarComplaints.com Seal Of Avoid Like The Plague

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Pontiac G6 has major problems with two areas fairly critical to the act of driving... steering & safety.

The 2006 G6 has a major defect trend with electronic power-assisted steering failure. The power steering cuts out while driving, making it extremely difficult to steer. G6 owners typically report spending $600 - $1,200+ to fix the problem, replacing either the entire steering column or the power assist motor.

In March 2010, GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles for this exact problem "...after receiving 1,100 complaints of power steering failures." However the 2006 G6 wasn't included in that recall.

In July 2010, GM issued a "Special Coverage Adjustment" — TSB #10183 — covering "certain" (not all) 2005, 2006 & 2008 Pontiac G6's for this power steering issue, up to 10 years/100k miles. However a large number of 2006 G6 owners have reported they were not covered by this campaign, based on VIN#.

As of late 2013 the NHTSA had well over 700 steering complaints on file for the 2006 G6, with 21 crashes & 12 injuries. The NHTSA closed their initial investigation in 2007, having determined that losing your power steering going over 15-20 mph isn't a big deal & that most crashes occurred at slow speeds, so not a safety risk. Ridiculous? Yep, we think so too.

The 2006 G6 also has an expensive problem with "popping" or "clunking" noises when turning, & that issue extends to newer model years as well.

Factor in the 2006 Pontiac G6's poor side impact protection & you end up with a vehicle you should steer clear of.

Was almost rear-ended on I480. The driver then flagged me over to the side of the road.he informed me my brake lights were not working properly. Come to find out my brake lights were staying on while I was driving and going out when I apply the brake. I am not sure when this started again. I say again because twice I have had dealerships repair this fix under the recall. The recall fix is faulty. GM is aware of this. As far as I'm concerned they are knowingly putting my life in danger. I have put a lot of money in my car. I repair and maintain it properly. I have receipts to support this fact. GM should be made to be responsible that my life is not in danger when I am properly operating their product.

Brakes lights continuously stay while driving or parked. Once the brake is pressed then it cuts off. The brake lights will randomly come and go off from time to time.

My cars electric system is completely went out. My heat and air conditioning system completely went out. Its extremely hard just to get my car out of park in my driveway. My keys get stuck in the ignition and its extremely frustrating because you can't leave your keys in the ignition, obviously you have to lock your door so no one will steal your car while your sleeping. And the most dangerous part or what's going on with my car is, when driving the brake medal is almost impossible to mash while driving even with two feet. And my morning commute to work requires me to be on the highway. I've had recall work done to my 2006 Pontiac G6 before due to my electric system failing and these are all of the same signs of the recall. And I wouldn't dare let my family ride in this car. Thank you

The contact owns a 2006 Pontiac G6. When the brake pedal was depressed, the rear brake lights would not illuminate. When the brake pedal was not being depressed, the rear brake lights would erroneously remain illuminated. The vehicle was taken to tinney GMC (11249 West carson city rd, greenvale, mi) to be diagnosed, but the failure could not be duplicated. The contact indicated that the vehicle was previously serviced in August of 2014 per NHTSA campaign number: 14V252000 (exterior lighting) for the same failure; however, the remedy was insufficient. The vehicle had been serviced for the same failure on seven separate occasions. The manufacturer was notified of the continuing failure. The failure mileage was 63,000.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the brake switch module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred twice. The contact called gilland Chevrolet GMC at (877) 666-7521 (located at 3071 us-231, ozark, al 36360) and was informed to schedule an appointment. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. ABS and traction control lights on dash came on during a routine drive, and remain on. Had mechanic inspect- concluded that both sensors working, malfunction due to no electricity being delivered. As a result, critical crash avoidance features (both anti-lock brake and traction control are critical) are disabled / failing. Repair would require tracing wire back to point of issue. Before having a private mechanic address, I learned of recall for this specific issue (NHTSA campaign number: 14V252000) effective Aug 18, 2014, whereby GM to address wiring harness with spacers and dielectrical lubricant. Contacted General Motors on this and told no open recall; told that it was already addressed by service at devan Chevrolet, wilton ct on Aug 13, 2015. I do acknowledge that I had the car at that dealer / service center on that date for another matter- I had no issues or symptoms with ABS and traction control while its possible that during that visit they actioned the remedy detailed in the recall, however, as there was no noted issue at that time, I am not sure they did anything that made a difference. Now that the symptoms are persistent, GM appears to declare no repair is required under the recall.

Recall 13036 including special coverage 16188 did not fix my vehicle. My vehicle has the following problems... -service brake lamps illuminate when the service brakes are not being applied -service brake lamps will not illuminate when the service brakes are applied -cruise control will not engage (the above conditions have happened when the car is in motion, stationary, on streets, highways, turning and braking.) -vehicle will shift out of park without the service brakes being applied these above conditions are the exact conditions that recall 13036 was to have fixed. The dealership addressed this recall earlier this year, and the vehicle is still having problems. I cannot get my vehicle back from the dealership because it is a violation of federal law to deliver the vehicle to me until the defect is remedied. Service technician says the BCM (body control module) needs replaced. The vehicle went in for recall, the recall didnt fix the problem. I took the vehicle back and am told that 1) the problem is the BCM and 2) I cant have the vehicle back until the problem is fixed. I am not satisfied. The vehicle problem is not remedied. I am having to pay to get the vehicle remedied. Pontiac customer service refers me to the NHTSA. The vehicle is a safety hazard to the driver and any passengers, as well as fellow motorists around the vehicle. I am upset that a large corporation would not take the time to make sure my vehicle is safe, after not fixing a recall. The NHTSA campaign id number for this recall is 14V252. Thank you

The contact owns a 2006 Pontiac G6. The contact stated that when at a parking lot of a school, the contact drove very slowly at an unknown speed, the brake pedal failed to respond when depressed and in addition the vehicle accelerated to an unknown speed. The power steering failed to turn left or right. The failure occurred without warning. The failure caused the contact's vehicle to crash into another vehicle, which made the vehicle come to a stop. Only the air bag on the power steering wheel deployed. The other air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed. The contact sustained a back injury that did not require medical attention. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign numbers: 14V252000 (service brakes, hydraulic, electrical system, exterior lighting, vehicle speed control, electronic stability control), 14V153000 (steering) and 14V224000 (power train) however, the parts to do the repair were unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not contacted and was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
