CarComplaints.com Seal Of Avoid Like The Plague

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Pontiac G6 has major problems with two areas fairly critical to the act of driving... steering & safety.

The 2006 G6 has a major defect trend with electronic power-assisted steering failure. The power steering cuts out while driving, making it extremely difficult to steer. G6 owners typically report spending $600 - $1,200+ to fix the problem, replacing either the entire steering column or the power assist motor.

In March 2010, GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles for this exact problem "...after receiving 1,100 complaints of power steering failures." However the 2006 G6 wasn't included in that recall.

In July 2010, GM issued a "Special Coverage Adjustment" — TSB #10183 — covering "certain" (not all) 2005, 2006 & 2008 Pontiac G6's for this power steering issue, up to 10 years/100k miles. However a large number of 2006 G6 owners have reported they were not covered by this campaign, based on VIN#.

As of late 2013 the NHTSA had well over 700 steering complaints on file for the 2006 G6, with 21 crashes & 12 injuries. The NHTSA closed their initial investigation in 2007, having determined that losing your power steering going over 15-20 mph isn't a big deal & that most crashes occurred at slow speeds, so not a safety risk. Ridiculous? Yep, we think so too.

The 2006 G6 also has an expensive problem with "popping" or "clunking" noises when turning, & that issue extends to newer model years as well.

Factor in the 2006 Pontiac G6's poor side impact protection & you end up with a vehicle you should steer clear of.

Got 2006 g6 gt, for Valentines Day, months after it would literally turn off while I was driving especially in my son in the car not having power steering while my car comes to a safe stop....happened couple times brought it into shops to figure out the problem and no one could figure it out said there's nothing wrong with your car, very frustrating especially when you think your car is safe. After couple years it starts working perfectly fine no problems after 3 years than all of a sudden it stopped again, lost all control of car, no accident but close to getting in one ......than my bf was you tubing and notice this default,

when your key is in the ignition and your in gear driving the key isn't suppose to move while in the ignition, that was happening, while driving I must of bumped my key leash which cause the key to move from the ignition and cause my car to shut off power completely!!! .I'm sure theres other g6 out there with this problem, my bf said there was an article about a girl dying from this defect!! Be carful check to see if u can move your key while driving?!!!!

I have no complaints as I was once a working stiff. It is sometimes hard to please the boss and get the job done fast, sometimes too fast and people cut corners. I believe that is what happened with my vehicle. the new guy gets the recalls and grunt work without it being checked on by a supervisor. A hose positioning was altered and it caused a major headache. I BOUGHT A CHILTONS G6 MANUAL AND FIXED IT.

Yes, my car stalls out on me! Mostly when I'm slowing to the first stop on my journey to work. I took it to my mechanic and they couldn't see what the issue was. Everything seemed fine. So they decided to replace the battery, even though it registered as good. What's going on?

I have have a '06' G6 GTP Hardtop convertible. Engine spontaneously shuts off and ABS light comes on every time I hit a speed bump, drive over railroad tracks, hit a pot hole. etc. Basically, every time I hit some sort of big bump on the road. When this happens, I would pull over the road, put it in park, and try to restart the engine. But, I would have to try several times before the car turns over. I would put car in total stop, park, turn off key, and wait a few seconds before restarting car. Sometimes it starts right up, other times would take a few attempts. It's almost like I need to wait for the car to reset itself. There is power when restarting, but it would not turn over immediately. Not even a starter sound or engine crank. It has gotten worse over the past week and and my car is shutting off more often. This has become hazardous especially driving on a thru-way.

I did take the car to a Pontiac dealer about a year ago to address this problem. The dealer changed out the electrical unit to a tune of $600.00. I brought the car back to dealer for same issue, and was basically told they could not find anything wrong with the car.

I own a Pontiac G6, 2006 and for the past year its been giving me lots of problems, when I've been driving for a long period of time my car just shuts off. Message on Radio reads engine power reduced, it ususally takes me a couple of tries before it turns back on. Once on and Im driving and come to a traffic light or stop it turns off again. Just spent $2,300.00 to fix it mechanic said I had a leak and my gas was burning and mixing with the coolant. Got it from the shop and still having the same problem feel like I was gagged. Now their telling me its the throttle body. Anyone has any suggestions????

While I was driving my car my car started stalling i guess i could say and then the gauges started going up and down. This has happened about 4 times. I have had to get it towed twice to the dealership. They say its the battery so they replace it but that hasn't worked.
