2006 Pontiac G6 (Page 3 of 3)

CarComplaints.com Seal Of Avoid Like The Plague

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Pontiac G6 has major problems with two areas fairly critical to the act of driving... steering & safety.

The 2006 G6 has a major defect trend with electronic power-assisted steering failure. The power steering cuts out while driving, making it extremely difficult to steer. G6 owners typically report spending $600 - $1,200+ to fix the problem, replacing either the entire steering column or the power assist motor.

In March 2010, GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles for this exact problem "...after receiving 1,100 complaints of power steering failures." However the 2006 G6 wasn't included in that recall.

In July 2010, GM issued a "Special Coverage Adjustment" — TSB #10183 — covering "certain" (not all) 2005, 2006 & 2008 Pontiac G6's for this power steering issue, up to 10 years/100k miles. However a large number of 2006 G6 owners have reported they were not covered by this campaign, based on VIN#.

As of late 2013 the NHTSA had well over 700 steering complaints on file for the 2006 G6, with 21 crashes & 12 injuries. The NHTSA closed their initial investigation in 2007, having determined that losing your power steering going over 15-20 mph isn't a big deal & that most crashes occurred at slow speeds, so not a safety risk. Ridiculous? Yep, we think so too.

The 2006 G6 also has an expensive problem with "popping" or "clunking" noises when turning, & that issue extends to newer model years as well.

Factor in the 2006 Pontiac G6's poor side impact protection & you end up with a vehicle you should steer clear of.

Cruise control would not work. Also discovered that the brake light would not work at times. I took it to the dealer for service. He said that the brake pedal sensor needed recalibrated. This fixed the problem for about 6 months. Since then I have had the sensor replaced (3) times.

When I am driving my vehicle, the brake lights are on as if I am pressing the brake. However when I press the brakes to slow down or stop, the brake lights turn off. When I start my vehicle and the vehicle is in park, the brake lights of my car are on as if I've pressing the brakes. However, again once I actually do press down the brake pedal, they turn off. So my brakes are on when I'm not pressing the brake pedal at all, and are off when I am pressing the brake pedal.

This Pontiac G6 was taken to dealer on three occasions for the same complaint. 9/23/2009. The first occasion, the vehicle's cruise control did not work and the gearshift was very difficult to move out of park. On one occasion the car had to be left at work site as gear shift could not be moved until the next morning. Last, several people told me that brake lights were on while driving and turned off when applying the brakes; all the symptoms of the recall #09V036000 second occasion: It was taken to dealer again 6/20/2011 for the same symptoms the dielectric lubricant suggested in the recall was applied both times and complaints cured. Third occasion: The vehicle is going into dealer 6/11/2012 for the same complaints..

2006 Pontiac G6 experiencing all issues documented in recall however this specific vehicle was in recalled. Cruise control will intermittently fail when driving, excessive force is required to shift vehicle from park into reverse/drive in some instances. Brake lights will illuminate when brakes are not depressed and will not illuminate when brakes are depressed. All issues are intermittent, any one of them occurring at least 1X week. Contacted both GM and dealership in August and again in December and while issues are documented, no repair has been made because vehicle is not under the existing recall.

The brake lights and cruise control work do not always work. Sometimes they don't work at all and other times the brake lights come on without pressing the brake pedal. I got a warning from a police officer that I had no brake lights and then realized that when my cruise control was not working, neither were by brake lights. My wife said sometimes she cannot got the car out of park and must turn off the car and try again to get it out of park.

My 2006 G6's brake lights stay on while driving. When the brakes are tapped, they will go off for about 10 seconds before turning back on. When the brakes are pressed to stop, they do not illuminate. When the brake lights are malfunctioning, the cruise control will not engage. This appears to be an issue many G6 owners are experiencing yet GM dealers call it a "no fix." (whatever that means).

Problems with car started in June of 06, for abnormal noise, from underneath car, condensation was constant in headlights even after replaced. Car disc player would constantly malfunction and was replaced - steering was always seemed not just right. Car would accelerate for short spurts, trunk filled with water after a rain really feel the whole stability of the car needs to be seriously looked at. Husband received brain injury from what looked like he just plowed into a block wall for no reason. He held a clean driving record with a current cdl license.

I have a 2006 Pontiac G6, with 66,638 miles on it. I am having issues with the brakes and the cruise control. The brake lights stay on and when I push on the brake pedal they go out, when I am in park I have to push the pedal all the way to the floor in order to put it into gear. I have noticed at times they flicker. I can not set my cruise control either. I have made phone calls to the dealer and to Pontiac about the GM recall # 80317. I was told that this recall only matches VIN #'s 64100001 to 64100093 and that I will have to pay for work that needs to be done on the car. I questioned why I can have the same make and model as the recall but my VIN # does not match? they informed me that the part numbers and the manufacture may be different!!! I feel this is a safety hazard to myself and my family and GM is not wanting to help me fix the problem, all they are looking for is taking my money for what seems to be a manufacture defect in the car.

The cruise control on my 2006 Pontiac G6 will disengage while driving at roadway speeds and the brake lights will come on and remain on without the brake pedal being depressed. This happens more often when the weather is wet and/or raining. I have been advised by Pontiac motor company and my dealer that no recalls are outstanding at this time on my VIN number. My auto had about 46000 miles when the condition was first noticed. I bought the vehicle used in April 2009.

We are having the same issue with our 2006 G6. Our exterior light sometimes doesn't work, the cruise control sometimes doesn't work. We had to replace at our own expense the brake rotors due to inferior quality. We were having the vibration issue some mentioned. My wife could not get it out of park one day, we had it towed to the dealership. We got the same story about the recall about not being covered by the recall and having to get it diagnosed at our expense. Last year our brakes completely failed and we rear ended a minivan. Luckily no one was injured. But our insurance is going up. I cannot wait until our lease is up in Feb 2010. We will trade this thing in and get a dependable foreign vehicle.
