Power Steering Fluid Leak

CarComplaints.com Seal Of Avoid Like The Plague

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Pontiac G6 has major problems with two areas fairly critical to the act of driving... steering & safety.

The 2006 G6 has a major defect trend with electronic power-assisted steering failure. The power steering cuts out while driving, making it extremely difficult to steer. G6 owners typically report spending $600 - $1,200+ to fix the problem, replacing either the entire steering column or the power assist motor.

In March 2010, GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles for this exact problem "...after receiving 1,100 complaints of power steering failures." However the 2006 G6 wasn't included in that recall.

In July 2010, GM issued a "Special Coverage Adjustment" — TSB #10183 — covering "certain" (not all) 2005, 2006 & 2008 Pontiac G6's for this power steering issue, up to 10 years/100k miles. However a large number of 2006 G6 owners have reported they were not covered by this campaign, based on VIN#.

As of late 2013 the NHTSA had well over 700 steering complaints on file for the 2006 G6, with 21 crashes & 12 injuries. The NHTSA closed their initial investigation in 2007, having determined that losing your power steering going over 15-20 mph isn't a big deal & that most crashes occurred at slow speeds, so not a safety risk. Ridiculous? Yep, we think so too.

The 2006 G6 also has an expensive problem with "popping" or "clunking" noises when turning, & that issue extends to newer model years as well.

Factor in the 2006 Pontiac G6's poor side impact protection & you end up with a vehicle you should steer clear of.

G6 GTP 3.9L

So I have a 06 G6 GTP sedan 3.9 engine I bought the car back in October of 2012. I feel in love with the car best car I've ever had except when the problems started. In 2013 I had to replace the alternator and the battery, car ran great for the rest of the year.

In 2014 I had a coolant leak for months couldn't figure out where it was coming from I was having to refill my coolant gauge every month I finally have had enough and took it to the shop came out to be a small part that is call a T on the back of the coolant gauge problem fixed then a week later my water pump goes out bought the part and fixed it. late 2014 I noticed my a/c wasn't getting cold bought freon thinking I was low but that wasn't the problem. I didn't care at the time since it was winter, 2015 comes and it's starting to get hot so took the car the the shop again they told me it was my a/c compressor and a/c manifold hose assembly bought the part had them put them in.

Everything was great and fine once again but in July of 2015 I noticed I had a power steering leak....... dammmmm car once again so I didn't care to fix the problem yet I just made sure I had power steering liquid in my car at all times of driving it. Now here we are January of 2016 as I'm off work and driving home I felt a small jerk came to a stop at a red light slowly took my foot of the brake and slowly pushed on the gas and again a small jerk still driving home and about every shift change a small jerk got home and parked the car.

So first thing that came to my mind was my transmission is soon to give out but then again I have thoughts it's my power steering messing things up. my power steering is leaking all over my timing belt and pulleys so when I drive it slips and I get that jerk after driving my car for about 30 minutes. I am fixing the power steering leak, problem is the rack and pinon. So will see if the jerk problem is resolved.

My car has 139.000 miles and I've heard of transmissions giving out at 140,000 miles I hope and pray it's not the transmission. I love the car but I am considering maybe giving it up :( will post new information once my car gets fixed...... has anyone had any of the same problems? if so what were the out comes?
