Power Steering Is Faulty

CarComplaints.com Seal Of Avoid Like The Plague

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Pontiac G6 has major problems with two areas fairly critical to the act of driving... steering & safety.

The 2006 G6 has a major defect trend with electronic power-assisted steering failure. The power steering cuts out while driving, making it extremely difficult to steer. G6 owners typically report spending $600 - $1,200+ to fix the problem, replacing either the entire steering column or the power assist motor.

In March 2010, GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles for this exact problem "...after receiving 1,100 complaints of power steering failures." However the 2006 G6 wasn't included in that recall.

In July 2010, GM issued a "Special Coverage Adjustment" — TSB #10183 — covering "certain" (not all) 2005, 2006 & 2008 Pontiac G6's for this power steering issue, up to 10 years/100k miles. However a large number of 2006 G6 owners have reported they were not covered by this campaign, based on VIN#.

As of late 2013 the NHTSA had well over 700 steering complaints on file for the 2006 G6, with 21 crashes & 12 injuries. The NHTSA closed their initial investigation in 2007, having determined that losing your power steering going over 15-20 mph isn't a big deal & that most crashes occurred at slow speeds, so not a safety risk. Ridiculous? Yep, we think so too.

The 2006 G6 also has an expensive problem with "popping" or "clunking" noises when turning, & that issue extends to newer model years as well.

Factor in the 2006 Pontiac G6's poor side impact protection & you end up with a vehicle you should steer clear of.

We bought this car used but seemed to be a great car. Little did we know that thanks to its maker it was a lemon. Just like a multitude of other owners the steering in the car went out and makes it almost impossible to make sharp turns. Only my husband can drive it. With all the issues with the steering one would think a respectable company would have a recall on this year just like the years before it!!!!!

I was backing out of my driveway to go to work, and my power steering light comes on on the message part of the radio and then the dinging sounds, like it would if you were low on gas. This has NEVER happened before. I was able to take my mom's car to work so that my dad could check out what was going on when I left my car at home. No way was I gonna drive it any further! The steering wheel locked itself up, I could barely get it back in the driveway. When I got home, my dad was pretty confused because he was looking for the pump and belt when there wasn't even one!! Neither of us knew that it was all electrical. So he did some research online and found all these complaints about the same thing. I am scared to drive it anywhere else!!!! I am a single mother of a 4 year old boy, and with him in the car it makes me very scared. I see all these comments that no dealerships have done anything about the problem... what are we to do????

Although I have bought my G6 used I think this is absolutely rediculous. Sometimes I have power steering and sometimes I don't. The buzzer in the car drives me nuts......

I just want GM to fix the fricken problem at NO cost to the customer. This is absolute bull**it. I should not have to pay for a car repair as expensive as this when it is clearly a safety issue. My advice to all who are having the same problem, call GM and open a case file and complain. The more we complain to GM the more they are apt to do something about it. I wish they would take all these complaints and send them to GM and they would realize this does not just effect Cobalts and G5's. Do your part and pick up the phone and give GM a piece of your mind. I bought this vehicle used for my daughter. We really liked the vehicle and it seemed to be rated well. We have had the vehicle now for almost a year with no problems until the other day. My daughter was backing out a driveway when a chime sounded and the driver's information display was showing "Power Steering". I took the vehicle to our local dealership and was told to fix this problem the power steering assist motor and the steering column would have to be replaced for $1056.16. This is absolutely ridiculous that the steering on a vehicle with this amount of mileage on it has to have this extensive amount of steering system work! I have done some looking on the internet and this is very common for these vehicles. This problem has resulted in many accidents and injuries. These vehicles need be recalled by GM!

About 3-4 months ago, driving on the interstate, my power steering light came on on my radio. shortly after it became impossible to drive. I took it to a local Pontiac dealership who did not notify me of this ongoing problem with this car, thinking I was the only one and maybe it was my car's time to go, I fixed the faulty power steering sensor, $700. 3 months later...today, I find myself stranded again with the same problem. I notified them, and the lady was very rude to me accusing me of "putting down her product" when I told her that I would not be buying another Pontiac.

I just want to know why they are so shady in notifying us of these problems, what is it going to take...death for them to realize that there is a serious problem with the power steering, because when you are traveling 70mph on the interstate and come to a complete stop, there's bound to be an accident.

Update from Nov 10, 2010: People I say it's time to get a lawyer involved. I thought I was the only one back in Nov 2009, so I got it fixed. I will say, driving at 70 mph on the interstate and coming at a complete stop due to faulty power steering was terrifying to say the least. I hear that there have been 14 deaths due to this problem. My local pontiac dealership "fixed" my car in Nov and just yesterday, 6 months after being "fixed" and $700 later, I find myself stranded yet again, with my radio displaying "power steering" I bought this car in 2007 and have had nothing but problems with the wheels, power steering, and have gone through 3 set of breaks, something is wrong. We need to get together and take action. The people at my local dealership were very rude saying that I was putting down their product and then mentioned Toyota's problems.....Toyota is taking care of their customers and repairing the problems, I would buy a Toyota today to get out of this piece of crap.

So I bought my 2006 G6 GT coupe last month because I previously had 2 grand am gt's that I loved ( 90's and 200 model ) . I joined the military and thought I'd get my self a gift and fell in love with this car. I heard a slight clunk noise when turning the car when I got it but my dad who is a mechanic said it's just something that happens with cars with electric steering . It really wasn't thought loud and it only happened when you turned so I wasn't worried and I got it for a pretty good deal. WELLLL! about 3 or 4 thousand miles later which would be today, my power steering light came on!!!! So I'm just waiting for it to give out completely and me have to get this power steering motor fixed which is what I'm sure there going to say it is. I have already complained with my VIN number to the NHTSA. Don't be lazy and please report thissssss! Have your VIN. If your not sure where it's at Google it ! I will get this fixed because I love this car but hopefully it last me for at least another 70,000 miles on the new one . PLEASEEE REPORT THISSSS! If you have any questions about how to report e-mail me and I'll try to get back with you as soon as possible . nike451@sbcglobal.net . My names Eric. PLEASEEE REPORT!

The power steering on my G6 GT started giving me problems as soon as the warranty expired. I hardly drive the car and researched that this is a very common issue with this model. GM stopped making them as of 2010. I called the dealer and they didn't want to help me. I then called GM and they sent me to get a diagnosis with the same dealer that told me "we don't want the car." Long story short, the repair cost was cut by 50% and I was told that I will have a warranty for a year or 1000.00 miles. I also notified NHTS. Call them, please. If they receive enough complaints, we will be part of a recall and those of us that are financing (like me) could finally get a car worth $25000.00

My Pont G6 while driving will suddenly start to lose power, all the lights on the dash board will start coming on ( security, engine, oil, temp etc) and flash, the battery light will then come on and stay on, at the same time the message display will begin displaying all sorts of error messages. the car will start to lose power but continue to run but without any power steering, everything electrical in the car also goes crazy ( radio, cd player etc) I have taken it to a dealership who said that the alternator appeared to die once it got to a certain temp so they replaced it, that worked for about 2 weeks before the same thing began happening again...theres nothing like this happening on a busy road..a major safety hazard...has anyone else had this problem or something similar to it?

A few weeks back, my car started flashing "power steering". I was obviously concerned, but was hoping it was just a fluke. Shortly after, it got more and more frequent. Then, one day, I go to leave in my car and notice I have NO power steering- awesome. Just as the warnings got more frequent, so did the loss of power steering. I'm a girl, and while I'd like to say I'm as strong as anyone else, I have quite the issues trying to drive that car without power steering. I always have to sit and wait for it to click on. I've tried everything to get it to come back on- who knows what actually does it. I called and emailed Pontiac only to find out there is "no current recall" on this issue.

I find that extremely hard to believe when there was one on their G5 and on the Cobalts. After a short time on Google, it's quite apparent that I'm not the only one with this issue. Thanks, Pontiac, for keeping your drivers safe. How ridiculous!! If anyone has ANY help they can offer, I'm all ears!!

Okay so here I am with my sister and our two children. We are going into town and all of a sudden I feel like i can not turn into the other lane so I had stopped completely in the median not sure what to do. Then I said turn off the car because you never know and this is a very busy high way and the only place I can go is in the middle. well anyhow i turned to car back on and it went away but not even seconds away from that stop I was having to pull on the side of the road again but this time I almost crashed into a restaurant and a car almost hit me from behind. All i thought about was my kids and them having to watch us go through this. So it's a Saturday and the dealership is closed and I'm stuck what to do what to do. someone has do something about this.

I am a 25 year old with a 2 year old little girl and I am driving down the interstate at 70 mph when my radio flashes "power steering" and I completely lose all power steering in my car!!!!!!!!! I (with much effort) pull over and turn off the car and re-start it and the problem is fixed......for about 2 minutes......this happens again , and again, and again....I have to pull over 3 times in like 10 minutes .....I get off the interstate and buy power steering fluid only to find out there is no where to put power steering fluid, it is electronically assisted steering and it's about an $800 fix.. HELLO, I am a single mother, I DO NOT have $800 for a damn car part! I then find out that Chevy Cobalts have had the same issue but had a recall to fix this issue.....NO RECALL on the g6!!?? I do not feel safe driving this car alone, much less with my daughter so I am stuck!!! Why hasn't there been a recall? We had out Pontiac G6 for close to 3 years now, and since we have other vehicles we hardly drive the G6. One morning when I decided to drive the G6 to work with my children to take them to school on my way to work. The damn car's steering wheel just stiffened up and I could not even turn it, we were lucky to bring it to a stop. Since then we been having same problems with this piece of crap, so called vehicle. We took it back to where we got the crap and were told it's just the way they were made, nothing they could do about it. Before, we tried to look for the power steering fluid reservoir and pump and to our surprise there is no such thing on this piece of crap. Now we are thinking about returning the vehicle to the finance company because it is not worth it!

I JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT THIS SITE. I HAVE POSTED SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ON ANOTHER SITE AS WELL. MY STEERING WOULD GO OUT EVERY NOW AND THEN IN THE BEGINNING. I BOUGHT STEERING THE FIRST TIME, ONLY TO FIND THERE WAS NO RESERVOIR FOR THE FLUID. SO I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN WHEN IT "IS IN THE PROCESS OF DOING IT" AND THEY COULD EVALUATE IT THEN. THAT WAS IMPOSSIBLE INITIALLY BECAUSE I NEVER KNEW WHEN IT WOULD DO IT, THEN WHEN I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON THE PROBLEM WOULD BE CORRECTED. HOWEVER A YEAR AGO THE PROBLEM BECAME COMMONPLACE. I DISCOVERED ANOTHER WEBSITE AND FOUND OTHER NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS OF PEOPLE WHO HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND GOTTEN IT "FIXED" SO TO SPEAK, HOWEVER THE PROBLEM CAME BACK MONTHS LATER. SO I DIDN'T WASTE THE MONEY TO GET IT "FIXED." NUMBER 1 I DIDN'T HAVE THE MONEY TO "THROW AWAY" ON A "FIX." AND NUMBER 2 THE CONSUMER SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY FOR THE MANUFACTURER'S MISTAKE. I HAVE HAD TO GET ANOTHER VEHICLE SINCE I COULDN'T SAFELY DRIVE THE 2006 G-6. IF ANYONE KNOWS OF A CLASS ACTION SUIT PLEASE INFORM ME BECAUSE THE TREATMENT FROM GM IS RIDICULOUS REGARDING THE G6.

My wife owns a 2006 pontiac G6 and has owned other pontiacs before. As well as myself have owned many pontiacs. 9 of them to be precise. You could say my wife and I are pontiac freaks. I even receive High Performance Pontiac Mags in the mail and have been since 1992. And still own every issue. We LOVE Pontiacs and been very happy with the G6 until the other day. My wife was driving home from work in the highway going 60 mph when the power steering light came on the stereo screen. While it beeped, the steering got stiff and the car began to slow down. My wife called me on the cell crying, said she had no choice but to pull over to the shoulder. In the middle of rush hour. Are you F*N kidding me! My wife is 5 months pregnant! My first child. I'm 33, just married a year ago. New house. Everything is perfect right! Then this sht happens. What a disappointment Pontiac. This is not the first time this happened. My wife told me about three other incidents. Did not believe this was going on until yesterday. It happened to me. I was backing out of the driveway when the steering got stiff. what you call F*N hard! what the FK! I said. I'm 5'9" 185 lbs. with a freakish Gorilla grip. I can bust Hulk Hogans hand with my grip. But I could not steer this SOB! The wheel was going against me. This POS PISSED ME OFF! Then I began to picture my wife's face as she pulled over to the side going 60 mph on the highway in FN rush hour. My heart skipped a beat man. Thinking the worst. What if something were to happen to her that day. Or what if now. Or tomorrow. Nobody knows. Not even Pontiac! This is BULLSHIT PONTIAC! Never been so PISSED in my life! We have been loyal to GM in general. But if this problem does not get resolved, I will be EATING MY WORDS and be trading in this POS of a G6 for a F*N FORD! Like they say,"NEVER SAY NEVER" and I've been saying "NEVER" since I was 8yrs old. But now this is going on and nobody wants to do anything about it, FirstOnRaceDay! is sounding pretty good!

I've griped on this site before about the power steering going out on my 2006 G6 probably close to two years ago. I don't need to go into details since everyone else here clearly knows what I'm talking about. Needless to say, like many here, I had the steering column replaced - at a cost close to $800 - and have continued to experience the same problems to this very day!

With the recent recall of the Pontiac G5s and Chevy Cobalts for faulty power steering, I want to stress the importance of anyone reading these complaints to please contact the NHTSA and file a complaint. I'm not a mechanic, but I can't imagine the power steering design is that much different between these models and the G6. I've complained to the NHTSA to essentially no avail, although an investigator told me to lube up the intermediate shaft and that might help. Right, a little monkey grease and the problem goes away, NOT!! If the NHTSA will force a recall on G5s and Cobalts, why not the G6s?

Seriously folks, if the NHTSA won't act, a class action suit seems the only alternative. I'm confident this is a huge problem and an easily winnable case.

Full disclosure: I'm not a lawyer and honestly, I don't care very much for them - but they

seem to be the only recourse at the moment
