NHTSA — Steering Problems

2006 Pontiac G6 (Page 22 of 58)

CarComplaints.com Seal Of Avoid Like The Plague

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Pontiac G6 has major problems with two areas fairly critical to the act of driving... steering & safety.

The 2006 G6 has a major defect trend with electronic power-assisted steering failure. The power steering cuts out while driving, making it extremely difficult to steer. G6 owners typically report spending $600 - $1,200+ to fix the problem, replacing either the entire steering column or the power assist motor.

In March 2010, GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles for this exact problem "...after receiving 1,100 complaints of power steering failures." However the 2006 G6 wasn't included in that recall.

In July 2010, GM issued a "Special Coverage Adjustment" — TSB #10183 — covering "certain" (not all) 2005, 2006 & 2008 Pontiac G6's for this power steering issue, up to 10 years/100k miles. However a large number of 2006 G6 owners have reported they were not covered by this campaign, based on VIN#.

As of late 2013 the NHTSA had well over 700 steering complaints on file for the 2006 G6, with 21 crashes & 12 injuries. The NHTSA closed their initial investigation in 2007, having determined that losing your power steering going over 15-20 mph isn't a big deal & that most crashes occurred at slow speeds, so not a safety risk. Ridiculous? Yep, we think so too.

The 2006 G6 also has an expensive problem with "popping" or "clunking" noises when turning, & that issue extends to newer model years as well.

Factor in the 2006 Pontiac G6's poor side impact protection & you end up with a vehicle you should steer clear of.

While driving home from work my ABS light came on without me touching the brakes. Then the security lock on the dash panel lit up, as if I had locked and activated the security system via the key fob. I was still driving, so there was no reason for me to activate the security system. As I came to a red light and went into the left hand turn lane, I noticed that I had no power steering. While waiting for the light to turn green, the battery light illuminated on the dash panel. I was able to make it safely across the street before the car shut itself off. When I tried to re-start the car, it wouldn't start. I let it rest about 5 minutes and tried again. The car started and within 30 seconds went through the same sequence. ABS light, security light, battery light and shut off. I have replaced the alternator and the battery as they both read low on voltage. To this day 2/15/2014, the only way to keep the car running is to run a direct cable from the alternator to the battery. It is the only way they give off the correct voltage and work with each other. They can no longer function separately of each other. I've read several other complaints of the same issue on edmunds.com with no response from GM. I have contacted GM and was told to take it to a dealership. I informed them I've had my own trusted, local mechanic look at it and he can't diagnose the issue other then a massive electrical failure. I asked GM what their resolution was since this is a know problem with the vehicle. Again, was just told to take it to a GM dealer. No further response or possible solution was offered from GM.

I only had the car one month. When I stopped at stop sign, the steering wheel jerked and alarm chimed. When I went to turn to the left the position sensor transducer in the steering was extremely tight like the car had shut off. I saw there was a recall on the steering after I took it to a mechanic and paid $185 in labor. The auto dealer paid for the part (replaced the steering column assembly).

Below is what happen to my 2006 G6 Pontiac ON01/23/2014, I was driving on the highway 60 mph the chime went off on my radio/driver information center (dic) and I lost my power steering almost crashed into a brick wall. GM is stating they need a letter from you in order to replace the defective part. Loss of power steering assist/ during this investigation, General Motors (GM) indicated that approximately 15,600 model year (my) 2005 Pontiac G6 vehicles built from November 3, 2004 through January 5, 2005 may experience a loss of power steering assist due to an insufficient crimp at the torque and position sensor transducer located in the steering column assembly. GM has indicated that it plans to send letters to the owners of these vehicles to inform them that it will extend the warranty coverage for the eps system in their vehicles to 7 years or 70,000 miles. Statistical analysis of the failures in the population affected by the wiring crimp problem indicate that the problem is an early life failure that should occur within the terms of the extended coverage. GM's investigation of eps failures in the subject vehicles identified a problem with the connector crimps during the two month production range covered by the warranty extension. During this period the crimps may be asymmetrical, resulting in inadequate pressure on the wire that can lead to electrical noise in the signal from the sensor to the controller. The controller may interpret this electrical noise as a malfunction of the system and default to manual mode (I.e., turn off the eps system).

Was traveling on free way when exiting ramp to the right at about 40mph when steering wheel started jerking back an forth then wheel seized up. I couldn't go left or right I was stuck cars were behind me my kid was in the car an to boot the ramp was really curved to the right. I panicked turned the car off an quickly restarted it. Not much difference with that. So basically I just turned the car off again an prayed to get smack from behind by another car. Got the car towed to mechanic he checked it an nothing is wrong he said..... I don't know why it happened but that's twice since I've had this car and I think it's time for this thing to go.

I have been noticing jerking in the steering wheel, then when starting the car and backing out of the driveway the power steering warning came on and I had trouble steering to back up. Restarting cleared the problem but I am concerned it will happen again where I can't restart. GM needs to fix this problem. From the number of complaints I am finding on the internet it is obvious it is a mechanical design default.

Electrical power steering goes out periodically when it gets very cold outside. This has been occurring for sometime now. If the temperature gets close to freezing outside the power steering shuts off a few after I first start up the vehicle and if I make very sharp turns it goes out. I never experience this issue when its warm outside. GM should be responsible for repairing this no matter if your vehicle is past 70000 miles. They failed by making and electrical power steering system in these year models which obviously they realized was a problem since the 2007 models have the traditional power steering pump.

I was driving down watt avenue and suddenly my power steering went out. I was unable to regain control of the wheel but thankfully I was just going straight and not turning. The problem has since gone away but this is a very dangerous incident that occurred and I suspect it will happen again. I have conducted research online to see if this has happened to other drivers, driving a Pontiac vehicle and it has happened numerous times. I believe there should be a recall on the power steering within this vehicle and I urge the NHTSA to follow up again on their investigation a few years ago and demand a recall on the power steering for this model and year. Considering the power steering was built into the transmission, this is a very serious problem that can't just be fixed by adding power steering fluid. If the NHTSA does not do anything about this serious problem and issue a possible recall, there will be more accidents and some may end up fatal.

Upon starting car there was a chime and "power steering" message on dash display. Vehicle extremely difficult to operate/control as the steering is heavy--no power at all. Parking and turning at low speed nearly impossible. Took it to the dealer today for steering column replacement per tsb. Was told by dealer this failed to correct the issue and that it might be the ps motor. Am being told the ps motor is not covered by tsb, nor is the diagnostic fee, but GM should cover as I've seen numerous complaints in forums.

Had the car check because the power steering light came on, couldn't detect. Now it's doing the same thing and the power steering went out for a few seconds. Put the car in park, turned it off and the power returned once the car was back on. Today, November 19, 2013, the power steering light flashed again. I recalled getting a letter a while back, if there is something wrong with the power steering why didn't they just do a recall. In the event you have to get this problem fixed then you can submit a claim form. Why didn't they just recall the car. I have my car since 2005 and it has been service on a regular basics to assure that it is in property working conditions. I've kept the oil change, brake repairs, etc. Now the steering is giving a problem.
