Truck started clanking and dropped a code (#3 and #5 misfire) day before I went overseas. Dropped it at a shop and went to the airport. A week later they called and said I needed a new cylinder head, cost would be $3000. I figured a new crate long block is $4000, so told them to put the valve cover on and I'd pick it up when I returned.
I get home, pick it up and pull the head. Sure as hell two of the 4 pillars were cracked. Since these are non-moving parts I'm thinking it was a bad casting. Anyways, what caused the misfire is oil comes up these pillars, fills the rocker shaft, then through the rockers down the pushrods, then fills the lifters. With the pillars cracked the oil was just spilling onto the top of the head and returning to the crankcase.
I picked up an overhauled head from Autozone for $500, new bolts and gaskets, and used some of my savings from doing it myself to buy some BBK shortys and got rid of the hemi-tick (I'll drop a post on that as well).
