I have done research on several different websites and found the problem. It seems my timing chain is making a clattering noise during deceleration. It is said to be because of the VVT system. I read the solution is replace timing chain and gears.

With the cam & lifter issue the best route would be to do a complete rebuild. I CAN NOT BELIEVE I will have to rebuild my engine at 150,000 miles.

My 1998 Ram had 196,000 miles when I bought this 2014. A complete let down.

1500 Laramie 3.0L Ecodiesel

Engine began to make a loud humming noise while driving and then began to overheat to the point the warning came on. I pulled over and out of abundance of caution had it towed to the dealership. The issue is being examined by the Sacramento Dodge, Chrysler Jeep Superstore service department. I have the total protection warranty and the eco-diesel warranty. I'm hoping the issue can be duplicated and that the repair is covered by one of the warranties. I was provided a temporary loaner vehicle while the investigate the issue. I will report back tomorrow.

engine squealing I purchased a 2014 Ram 1500 4x4 Sport Crew Cab on December 12, 2015. It had 1 previous owner who had the truck built/ customized to their own specifications. I love the truck. It's powerful and it's loaded. About two weeks after purchasing the truck, I noticed a loud sqealing noise while in idle. I let it go for about a week thinking it was just a bad belt or maybe one of the pulleys was on it's way out. I live in MA and we've seen some frigid temps over the past couple months so I didn't really think much of it. Brought the truck in to have it checked and the problem was diagnosed as being a bad oil pump through Chrysler's star case that was opened by the service technician. 25k miles with a bad oil pump is seriously concerning after owning the truck for about a month. The dealership had the truck for a week and replaced the oil pump. Given it's not a simple job, I was extremely cautious to have the truck returned with additional problems. A month goes by with no problems and the sqeal begins to return. Back to the dealership. After being in the shop for a week, the problem is now diagnosed as a bad bearing inside the cam shift! Now they have to tear the head down. I called back for an update yesterday and after the tech tore the head apart, they are replacing it with a brand new 345ci.

When i questioned why and how this could happen with such low mileage on the engine, I was told there's a known problem with engines in production from X to Y months in 2014. After searching the web, I was unable to find anyone who shares the same problems. I'm also glad everything is covered under warranty or I'd be shelling out thousands of dollars between the engine and labor to replace.

I purchased the truck from Harr CDJ in Worcester, MA. I will say that they've been extremely helpful throughout all of these problems. They put me in a new 2016 Ram 1500 to drive for the duration. It's got the 3.6 Pentastar though and doesn't have half the stuff my truck has.

Update from Mar 29, 2016: After being skeptical about the short block replacement, the truck seems to run ok. Lifters sound a little louder than normal on the passenger side though. Mechanic did an excellent job. I contacted Chrysler about the problem and opened a case. The agent I spoke with was very helpful. I requested an extension on the power train warranty and requested they reimburse me for 1 month of my truck payment since the truck had been in the shop for over a month. Chrysler expedited parts on backorder and both the dealership and Chrysler customer service rep kept me updated throughout the process. Chrysler reimbursed me in full for 1 months payment on the truck and gave me 12 free oil changes within a 3 year time frame.

Unfortunately after 2 weeks, the truck is still squealing. I'm hoping it's something simple like a belt or pulley. Otherwise, I'm going to request they buy the truck back from me.

Update from Jun 28, 2016: Truck has a horribly rough idle at 1k RPM on start up. It's going back to the dealership.
