1500 Sport R/T 5.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 78,730 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

The truck is 7 years old with 78,000 miles, therefore I can expect to start having an issue now and then although it's worth mentioning that I take extremely good care of this vehicle. It's an R/T which Ram only produced approximately 5,000 of them a year from 2009 to 2018 and they are discontinued. I LOVE this truck. It has never seen a dirt road.

Anyhow, the first thing I noticed was a check engine light so I immediately went home and checked to see what the OB2 code was which is PO-0463 Fuel Level Sensor. I cleared the code and cranked it up. The check engine light came back on almost immediately and I now noticed my gas gauge was reflecting empty (which I had close to a full tank) and the low fuel light is on.

What sucks is the cost to repair, especially if I want to go back with an OEM part which I almost always do unless I find something to be proven better than OEM. I'm told that for some reason changing only the bad sensor is not an option and that the fuel pump has to be changed as well. Cost for part(s): OEM- $1,034.00, for aftermarket- $300.00.

The next issue is that it's in the fuel tank. I've changed one on a chevy truck and the easiest way is to pull off the bed of the truck. Removed 4 bolts and hoisted it off under an oak tree in my front yard, no problem. But that was 15 years ago before I became disabled. I'm going to have to pay for this one and I'm afraid to ask what the labor charge will be.

Poor design of variable resistor on the fuel level sensor. Should not fail with less than 55,000 miles on the vehicle.

1500 SLT 5.7L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 48,000 miles

My sensor has not worked in months. After researching many other Rams different years have had same issue. There are recalls for this issue just not on the 2015 Dodge Ram 1500. If this is a issue with all other models and years then should be a recall on this and not paid out of pocket by consumer. This is a costly job need to lower fuel tank, take out fuel pump and replace sensor harness. The part and labor is expensive.

1500 Sportsmen Hemi 5.2L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 76,000 miles

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON, FUEL SENSOR FAILURE FLASHES ON DASH, FUEL GAUGE GOES TO EMPTY, MILEAGE GOES TO 0. NORMALLY HAPPENS AROUND HALF TANK. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN REPORTED TO CHRYSLER WITH NO RECALL COMPLETED. HOW MANY DODGE OWNERS NEED TO COMPLAIN BEFORE CHRYSLER TAKES RESPONSIBILITY FOR A FAULTY PART.
