During a regular oil change the lower oil pan gasket was found to be leaking. This was the lesser of 2 evils. After some internet research it appears that the oil pan leaking is a common problem. In this case it was just the lower oil pan which is fairly easy to repair. However, the upper oil pan leaking is also common and requires the engine to be removed to repair.

An oil pan leak in a 2022 Subaru Ascent is a widely documented issue primarily caused by a failure of the factory silicone liquid gasket (RTV) seal. This issue often appears as slow seepage and is frequently discovered during routine oil changes.

There are Two Types of Oil Pan Leaks. The 2.4L turbo engine in the Ascent is equipped with two oil pans. The location of the leak determines the severity of the repair:

Lower Oil Pan: This is the steel pan at the very bottom, accessible from underneath the vehicle. If this seal is leaking, a technician can remove it, clean off the old sealant, and apply a fresh RTV seal.

Upper Oil Pan: This is an aluminum component sandwiched between the lower pan and the engine block. Repairing an upper pan leak usually requires the engine to be entirely removed from the vehicle.

Repair Expectations Cost: If your 2022 Ascent is still under the 5-year/60,000-mile factory powertrain warranty, this repair is fully covered. If you are out of warranty, labor costs are significant (resealing the lower pan takes about 6 hours, while the upper pan can take 12 or more hours).

Time: Because of the labor required, especially if the upper pan or other components are involved, your vehicle could be in the shop anywhere from a few days to a month if parts are backordered
