Timing belt pulley tensioner did not put enough tension on timing belt and so the timing belt slipped, causing the pistons to collide with the valves causing major engine damage. Subaru engines are interference engines which means that if the timing belt breaks, or skips/slips, the pistons come in contact with the valves causing severe engine damage and requiring major engine work.
