I bought the 13 year old car in 2018 after my the mechanic checked the car. Unfortunately he didn't hear this cracking noise during initial test-drive (there was a piece of wood inside the cv joint to muffle the sound). However he did say that the CV boots were dry and broken, so the lubricant leaked out.

The repair came in at 20% of the car price (400 euros). The rubber components wear out over time even if the car has low mileage. The boots don't cost nearly as much as the replacement of the joints.
