The vast majority of owners experiencing this problem have reported that Subaru has not been able to find the cause of the engine hesitation, or fix the problem.

Especially because this is a potential safety defect, we are flagging the 2014 Outback as a model year to watch out for.

Outback 2.5L

Out of the blue, after driving the car for approx 1 hour, brakes didn't engage and pedal went to the floorboard. After pumping the brakes, the car slowly stopped. Brake failure continued after car was restarted after being stopped and engine turned off. Brake fluid was full, no obvious issues. Because I was in Yosemite when this occurred, I had to get the car out of the park, so I put the car in reverse (thinking I was going to have to use the manual setting on the transmission instead of automatic so I could down shift to slow the car down), and the brakes reengaged. I was able to get the car home and looked at however, issue cannot be identified.

Mechanic replaced brakes master cylinder, thinking that was the only thing it could be. Brakes failed again on Feb. 17th. Again, putting the car in reverse re-engaged the brakes.

Local Subaru dealer (Diablo Subaru in CA) says the computer shows no errors and they can't get the car to replicate the issue and that "the car is ready to be picked up". Really? Give a car back to a customer with a known brake failure issue - that's simply irresponsible. Who knows what the fix is?
