The rubber molding has been melting on these Prius hatchback handles for some time now. Once the rubber melts, it drips down and makes a mess everywhere. Sooner or later it makes the latch inoperable.

Prius 4

  • CVT transmission
  • 96,000 miles

The rubber on the handle MELTED into a gooey mess that sticks to everything. The hatchback CANNOT be opened, the rubber adheres to the inside of the mechanism. The only way to fix it is to take it to a Toyota repair facility and pay around $300 to have it replaced. It is a KNOWN issue, just google it! And, yet, Toyota refuses to cover the cost of it. The part is deficient and the vehicles should be recalled at repaired at the cost of Toyota, as it poses a safety threat to anyone who may have to egress in the case of an emergency, not to mention the financial cost.
